ABDUL-GUSAU POLYTECHNIC ,TALATA MATARA.

Abdu Gusau Polytechnic, Talata Mafara has a long standing history. Its origin dates back to the emergence of staff training centre, Sokoto in 1956 which was eventually renamed Staff Development Centre, Sokoto in 1972.

It is the staff development centre that was later amalgamated with community development institute, Birnin Kebbi and home economics centre, Gusau,to constitute an arm called Administration Sokoto which formed part of the then Polytechnic of Sokoto State, Birnin Kebbi in 1980.

The geographical division in the country in 1991 saw the creation of the Kebbi State from the former Sokoto State. With the former Sokoto State Polytechnic leadership of Col. Bashir Salihi Magashi thought it desirable to establish its own polytechnic at Talata Mafara to take advantage of the existing structure meant for a Technical College already there.Still the College of Administration Farafaru remained an integral part of the proposed Polytechnic and served as the temporary site.

The Government of Sokoto State renamed the institution as Abdu Gusau Polytechnic after the late Engineer who died in November 1994. In October 1996 the Federal Government created Zamfara State out of the then Sokoto State, a situation necessitated the hurried relocation of the institution to its partially completed permanent site as it was possible legally for Zamfara State to continue to sustain an institution belonging to it but located within Sokoto State.

Larry Izamoje was born in Onitsha in 1962 to a family of nine, Lawrence Osadomey Izamoje who is the second son of his parents is a native of Ekpon, a town in Igueben Local Government Area of Edo State. His education started at Dogho Primary School, Warri, Delta State in 1968 from where he got admitted to Orerokpe Grammar School and then University of Lagos in 1981 where he obtained first and second degrees in Sociology.

He grew up in Warri where as a teenager, he hawked plantain on the streets for his mother who was a petty trader. When Larry was not hawking for his mother, he assisted his father in his cosmetics distribution work.

He grew with one thing in mind to become a star. That dream of becoming a star was what led him into playing table tennis for his school at the secondary level. When tennis could not lead him to his dream of becoming a star, he dropped table tennis for soccer. He kept playing even after admission into the higher institution. It was in 1982 while playing for his hall in one of the inter-hall matches as the sports secretary of Makama Bida hall that tragedy struck. This marked an end to his playing career, though he played and earned monthly, playing for WRECA (Water Resources Engineering Construction Agency) during his NYSC days.

With his leg out of action, he pressed on with his mouth. He went to Yaba market, bought a cheap microphone, carried his cassette deck, went to University of Lagos playing field and started running commentaries. Some laughed at him. He paid little attention and persisted in what he loved doing. It was during one of his commentaries that somebody suggested he should go to Ernest Okonkwo, Nigeria’s legendary football commentator. And so to Ernest Okonkwo he went after his masters in 1985. And within 20 minutes of talking with Okonkwo, he took him and gave him all the polishing he needed.

During his NYSC he served as Editorial Board member of Kano State NYSC Newsletter. He joined Federal Radio Corporation of Nigeria (FRCN) in 1985 and was attached to the outside Broadcast Unit earning N15. Between 1986 and 1990, he held several positions at the Concord Press on the invitation of Trigo Egbegi who was the sports editor of the group then. He rose to become the deputy Group Sports Editor in Concord. He later that year joined The Mail as sports editor and after one year joined DBN Television.

While working in DBN, one or two things did not go down well with him so he decided to resign. After leaving DBN, he decided to set up his own office. He looked for a small room at Ijaiye, opposite the Nigerian Institute of Journalism, NIJ, Ogba. He got a one-room office. With no money for furniture, he went to Ikeja market and bought a table, 2 chairs, and an old typewriter for N2000, all at second hand and drove everything to the office in a second hand Volkswagen Beetle. They then got some second hand planks which they repainted and used for partitioning.
One of the challenges he faced was how to come about a business name. He decided to take the first three letters from the wife’s name (Bridget) and two letters from his name (Larry) to form BRILA. That was how they started the first business called Brilla Sports Video Club in 1992.

For two years of running the sports video club, only one student of NIJ became a member of the club. The dream of being on air was not realized until 6 months after the company took off, with Ogun State Broadcasting Corporation (OGBC). He paid with his own money for the first 6 months. He travelled from Lagos to Abeokuta everyday on his own expenses to present just a fifteen minutes programme because all the companies he approached for sponsorship rejected it instantly. None believed they could do sports on radio. OGBC rejected the idea of sports on radio because they couldn’t imagine an FM station talking sports in the morning. And that’s how Brilla married sports with music. They played music and talked over it while standing. OGBC liked it, everybody liked it and that was when Cadbury took over sponsorship in October 1993, and Bournvita Sports Special on OGBC 2 FM was born.

He plied Lagos Abeokuta route for six years and in the process the beetle he was using then caught fire three times. When he later changed to a passat car, one day while he was travelling a friend, they decided to park and ease themselves and in the process of opening the door it fell into the gutter. There was also a time someone placed his hand on the boot and the body of the boot gave way. He had to use a sticker to cover that spot. To make ends meet, he became a cab driver (Kabu Kabu driver). While going to OGBC to present programmes, he would pick passengers on the road for a fee. This is now history

Izamoje who was the only African journalist to cover the historic Marvin Hagler vs Sugar Ray Leonard bout in Las Vegas, USA, in 1987 and the only African to attend the global Sports Radio conference, San Diego, USA, in 2002 became the CEO of his own leading Sporting Communications Company. On the first of October 2002 the first all sports radio station in Nigeria and Africa, Brilla Sports Radio 88.9 FM a.k.a. The Fans Assembly started operations. The company also publishes Sports People International magazine and owns a printing press which is managed by his wife.

Born February 24, 1967 to the family of Alhaji Yakubu and Omofemiwa Jimoh in Igbotako in Okitipupa, Ondo State, Barrister Jimoh Ibrahim’s story is what you could call grass to grace. His father who had seven wives and 40 children is a bricklayer and his mother a fish seller.

He had his early education at Community Grammar School, Igbotako and from there to Federal School of Arts and Science, Ondo. He proceeded to study Law at and later changed to , Ile-Ife, in Osun State, for a degree in International Law and Masters in Public Administration. He also obtained a Masters degree in Economic and International Tax at Harvard University. He worked as a Consultant to the International Monetary Fund (IMF) on tax reforms in Croatia and Estonia. He was also part of the Harvard team that went to Bangladesh to build the tax reforms.

With seven lawyers in his Law and Justice Chambers, he practiced Law for six years, appearing in various courts from the magistrate to the Supreme Court. He authored Indigenous Governance in Nigeria and published two volumes on Mohammed Bello.

He was a Special Adviser to the first Military Administrator of Bayelsa State, a member of the exclusive Federation Account Allocation Committee and was Chairman of FAAC News, the first monthly magazine that published the activities of that Committee. He was Executive Secretary, African Center for Policy Studies; consultant to various bodies and multilateral institutions; Chairman Global Fleet Companies and Group Managing Director, NICON Group.
As a youngster he got petty contracts and used some of his father’s bricklaying materials to execute them. He started making millions in his mid 20s, making his first million during his youth service period.

He discovered that the Local Governments did not have a law of their own, but the state and the federal government had. So he packaged a local government seminar on law for all the local governments in the country and that fetched him N3.6 million. That same year, he organized about 14 workshops for top public functionaries at all tiers of government and by the time he was finishing youth service, he had about N70 million in his account.

It was through one of those seminars that he learnt about the huge amount of revenue Nigeria lost to withholding tax by big oil companies. His further research made him submit his findings in form of a proposal that he could recover the funds as a consultant to the federal government but with a specific percentage as his commission. His submission was approved and within a short period of time he was remitting billions of Naira to the account of the federal government.

He acquired with the money he made from seminars a swampy land at the Victoria Garden City (VGC) gate, which he later transformed into an ultra-modern filling station with two expensive halls. Barrister Jimoh who used to sleep four hours a day when he started, was the one who brought the concept of bringing in halls into oil marketing. Though the initial budget for the outfit was N21 million, two paid a rent of over N40 million which was too much to build the Station. The surplus was invested in real estate. After the VGC outlet, he opened another station at Ilupeju bypass.

He contested for the governorship of Ondo State under the platform of ANPP in 2003 and lost to Chief Agagu. Global Fleet Oil and Gas came as a result of his political experience. When he was contesting in the gubernational elections, setting up Ondo oil was an item on his manifesto, so when he didn’t win, he decided to go ahead with the idea. The only difference was change of name.

When it was finished, three banks wanted it at the same time. In less than a month the VGC and Ilupeju Stations built the Shomolu Station and a bank paid the rent on it. Within a few years, he was able to acquire hundreds of filling station and has vowed never to stop until he gets to one thousand. He currently imports petroleum and has a big storage depot in Apapa.

Today, he has ventured into several businesses. They include hospitality industry, telecommunication, banking, real estate, block making, carpentry, industrial dry cleaning, roofing tiles, insurance etc. His has 70 per cent (N46 billion) equity stake in NICON. He also staked a claim in the purchase and control of Executive Airlines Services (EAS), an airline operator which was changed to NICON Airways. He also acquired majority stake in Virgin Nigeria, and changed its name to Air Nigeria. Air Nigeria is poised to become the National carrier. The NICON Group now has eleven subsidiaries: Nicon Properties; Nicon Energy; Nicon Academy; Nicon Trustee; Nicon Insurance; Nicon Investment; Nicon PFA; Nicon Hotels; Nicon Sao Tome and Nicon United Kingdom.

Innocent Ujah Idibia popularly known as 2Face (Tuface) was born on September 18, 1975 in Jos, Plateau State, 2Face hails from Otukpo, Benue State. 2 Face, second from a family of four, all boys, whose father Michael Idibia, worked with the Ministry of Agriculture and his mother a teacher had a childhood ambition of becoming a professional footballer. After attending St. Gabriel’s Secondary, Makurdi, and IMT, Enugu, he finally settled for music. While in secondary school, he had formed his first group, Black Universe (in 1992 with three other boys). Bad Manners was later to replace Black Universe while he was in Jos for a one-year remedial in 1994.

The decision to settle for music was not an easy one. He had dreamed of pursuing the Higher National Diploma (HND) in 1996 after his Ordinary National Diploma (OND) programme. It was hectic paying the school fees, so 2Face and his old pal, Augustine Ahmedu (Black Face) started performing at shows and within a short while became the toast on campus. Back then, 2Face was known as L.A while Black Face was called Pirate.

They later moved to Lagos and in 1997 founded the Plantashun Boyz (which later included Faze – Chibuzor Orji). Despite facing difficulties like lack of accommodation, finances and getting airplay, they were determined to make it in music. With brief mention in Hip Hop World and Fame Weekly, they jumped buses, begged radio DJs, squatted with friends wondering where the next meal will come from. The group recorded two albums and was brought to lime light when they were featured on Tony Tetuila’s song, “Omode meta”. 2Face recalls “From our first show, we got N3, 000 from Jimmy Jat and we felt like it was N3 million because then, we played a lot of free shows. Uncle Jimmy was the first to actually pay us. The highest we ever got was N10, 000. To be honest with you, that money was like millions to us.”

In 2004, 2Face opted out of the group and went solo. His first solo album Face 2 Face has sold over two million copies. His song, “African Queen” from the debut album is considered his best and greatest hit. “African Queen”, which was the first ever video to be played on MTV Base, also featured as one of the soundtracks of the Hollywood movie Phat Girls. The track fetched him the Best West African Video Award in March 31, 2005 as well as the Best African Male Artiste Award. He also won the MOBO Award (an acronym for Music of Black Origin Awards), Ghana Music Awards, City People Awards for Excellence, Global Excellence Awards, Awards for Music Excellence in Nigeria and outstanding achiever’s award amongst many other international and local awards.

His success in the music scene has taken Nigerian music to the next level, and created the platform for Nigeria to dominate the music scene in Africa.

He has started a foundation to support the less privileged (especially the kids) in the society called the Innocent Idibia Foundation. The focus would be access to quality health care.

Born in Kaduna City on April 30, 1960, Frank Uzoawuotu Nneji hails from Nguru, Aboh Mbaise Local Government Area, of Imo State. He grew up in a village from a family of nine; his father was a retired soldier turned farmer, while his mother was a nurse. He attended the University of Nigeria Nsukka, where he graduated with a degree in Biological Sciences in 1982 before proceeding for an Executive programme at Wharton Business School, Philadelphia, USA and Chief Executive programme at Lagos Business School, Lagos.

When he left secondary school in 1976, he enlisted as an auxiliary teacher during the Universal Primary Education (UPE). He taught for about one year before gaining admission into the university.

As a nurse, his mother wanted all her kids to be in the medical line. This led him into reading Biological Science with the idea of switching over to medicine. But after the first year, it became obvious that he wasn’t cut out to be in that field. He wanted to change to a business course but abandoned the idea when he discovered that it will cost him one year, so he opted to learning business from the outside.

He made extra money publishing in school. At the end of each semester, he would go to the records and collect the past question papers of the difficult courses for the session. He would then reproduce them and sell them to students. That was how in 1980 during his 200 level he was able to raise N500, which was big enough to buy a student rebate ticket being offered by Nigerian Airways to travel to Italy where he bought T-shirts, jeans and belt. That was how he started selling T-shirts, jeans, belts, etc as an undergraduate.

After graduating with a degree at the age of 23, he headed straight into the business world. Aimed with little experience and his N750 NYSC bicycle allowance he rented an office and started RAPIDO, a company that supplies educational materials. He started with writing boards and from there to other audiovisuals like projectors. His first major contract was with the Federal University of Technology Owerri (FUTO) which was taking off as at then. He was to supply them with writing boards. With less money and no staff, he made the boards himself employing the services of his friends who were waiting for jobs by buying them drinks.

Many did not give him a chance as a young man to survive. He still remembers vividly the comments of two people who saw him the first time he was trying to get his reading table which he had gone to the village to carry for office use. One was an engineer who having learnt about his new office said, “You small boys, why don’t you go and get a job and gain experience? You people are becoming too ambitious.” He also remembers the comment of the second person who said, “I wish you all the best.” the irony is that the second person recently came to beg him for a used tyre for his grounded car.

Having no money, what he did was to go out with his LPO and source for money. His friends will bring in the money, he would execute the business and they shared the profit on equal basis. Creating a win-win situation. That was how he built capital over time. While he was doing this, he frequently travelled to Lagos where he was exposed to the hassles of public transportation. Either the bus is over loaded with what is called attachment or the unruly behaviour of the bus driver or conductor.

One experience that was to change the way things are done happened somewhere at Ore. On that faithfully day, the bus finally broke down after frequent stopping of picking passengers on the way. While others were pre occupied with how to get to their destination, he was asking himself series of questions. “Is there no way things can be done better?” that was all that he needed to set his mind in motion.

And so in 1987, he told himself he was going to run a bus service with a difference. His idea was to provide all that was lacking in other bus companies. To provide the things he would’ve wished were there for people of his class. With his little experience as a part of the student’s union transport management in his university days he did his feasibility study and put up a business plan in place. In 1991 he was able to get Diamond Bank to lease 5 Hiace buses for him at N1.5 million. That was the birth of Associated Bus Company Plc (ABC Transport).

The number one priority in ABC is safety. The company has been able to carve a niche for itself by spending heavily on safety, comfort and general customer service relations. The company which has the record of recruiting skilled and highly professional and educationally-qualified personnel including drivers with adequate training as a back up is the only transportation company in the country for now that is implementing the tracking of buses. This makes it impossible for speed limits to be violated.

With executive express, super sleeper and 40-sitter vehicles in which you can relax and almost sleep, just like a bed, the company came out with different services hitherto unknown or thought to be impossible in the country. One of such services is the ABEX Services, which makes it possible for mails and goods to be delivered over night at an affordable price. Running almost a fleet of 100, with more than 15 trucks and a daily departure of more than 80, movement of individuals, mails and goods became easier. Others include travelling in an air-conditioned bus with toilet facilities.

With over 1,200 people in their pay roll, and going into other areas like courier and hospitality, the company in 2004 came out with a new service tagged Coach West Africa. It’s a service that cuts across West African sub-region and has been able to expose the tourism potentials of the sub-region. ABC has brought comfort and decency in long distance travels not only in Nigeria but also in other West African countries. An industry were in the past a typical bus that could seat 50 people is made to carry times two of that number with half standing.

Dr. Nneji from a humble start has won several awards like the SuccessDigest Entrepreneur of The Year Award, Federal Road Safety Award, Travel Personality of the Year Award, Fate Model Entrepreneur Award amongst others.
