The West African Examination Council WAEC has released the results of the recently concluded May/June 2010/2011 examination results.

Only 42 per cent of students, which represents 677,007 candidates of the 1,351,557 candidates that sat for the May-June 2010 West African Senior School Certificate Examination (SSCE), obtained five credits and above, the Head of Nigeria National Office (HNO) of WAEC, Iyi Uwadiae, said in Lagos on Thursday.

Mr Uwadiae said only 534,841 candidates obtained six credits and above in the examination, while 337,071 candidates obtained credits in English language, mathematics and at least three other subjects.

The West African Examinations Council (WAEC) also said it has withheld the results of 77,168 candidates who sat for the May-June 2010 West African Senior School Certificate Examination (SSCE). Mr Uwadiae said the withheld results were owing to alleged involvement of the affected candidates in examination malpractice.

The council said that the results of 1,278, 843 of the 1, 351,557candidates who sat for examination were fully processed, while 72,714 candidates had few of their subjects still being processed.

“I am delighted to announce the release of the results four weeks ahead of schedule. A total of 1,058,806 candidates, representing 78.33 per cent, have two credits and above, 936,470 68.84 per cent) have three credits and above and 806,583 (59.67 per cent) have four credits and above.

“Also, 677,007 candidates obtained five credits and above while 534,841 candidates (39.57 per cent) obtained six credits and above,” he said.

He added that 451,187 candidates obtained credit and above in English Language while 560,974 obtained credit and above in mathematics.

He said 98 blind candidates sat for the examination, out of which 13 obtained credits in five subjects, including English language. These special candidates were exempted from taking mathematics and science practicals.

Out of the 1, 351,557candidates that sat for the examination, some 611,893 were female.

During the year under review, the Bank partnered with Stepping Stones International, supporting them with P 816,000 over a period of three years for the development of six income generating projects.   • Donation of P450, 000 to SOS Children’s Village to build a home for orphans in the new village being developed in Serowe, Botswana. The relationship between SOS and Barclays dates back to 1986 when the first Barclays house was established at the Children’s Village in Tlokweng.
  • To respond to the cancer epidemic, Barclays Botswana partnered with Cancer Association of Botswana (CAB) to raise awareness and to strengthen support groups. P150, 000 was donated to the Association to assist in running a series of educational and cancer awareness radio programmes, workshops for the support groups and translation of educational material into Setswana.
  • The need to conserve and preserve the environment is growing daily and Barclays partnered with Somarelang Tikologo to initiate an environmental school project in the Francistown area to translate educational material into Setswana and to provide support for green micro entrepreneurs.

Charity Begins at Work. Barclays Botswana colleagues are central to the Botswana community program and they continue to engage with their communities in various ways. Encouraging colleagues to take part in community investment program by volunteering their time and skill to NGO’s and other charitable organizations. Barclays Botswana achieves this by providing 16 hours off work to volunteer time and skill and providing small grants.

Throughout the year under review colleagues have engaged in fundraising efforts to support community projects. In addition, they have gone out and volunteered their time and skill with community organizations. Their activities included tree planting and litter picking in commemoration of Earth Day and World Environment Day; computer literacy training; orphan care and cancer awareness programs. A total of 85 fund raising and volunteering activities were held and 30 community organizations supported.

Under the Charity begins at work theme, Barclays Botswana colleague franchise went all out to give to the communities in various forms. The annual Make A Difference Day was also a huge success.

Partnerships

  • Barclays Botswana has reaffirmed its commitment to support education in Botswana by partnering with the University of Botswana to help develop students’ skills and improve their understanding of the business sector. In 2008, there was the first lecture aimed at inspiring students to start shaping a career path as they prepare to enter a competitive business environment. Going forward, there will be a series of lectures where there will be sharing different topics with them.
  • In 2008, there was launching of the Barclays – F.G. Mogae Scholarship Fund in honour of the former President Mr Festus G. Mogae. In which the bank committed P1.5million to support this historic initiative. The Fund is targeting 25 young Batswana who are unable to get financial support for their education to pursue their Masters programmes. In the year under review, five students were awarded the scholarship. Indeed this shows reaffirmation and commitment towards the development of education in Botswana.

    Make A Difference Day Campaign
    In 2008, 73 projects addressing issues of financial education, organic gardening, environmental conservation and preservation, orphan care and support and computer literacy were implemented across Botswana with an overall value of over P 1million.
