The controversy surrounding the primaries of the in Ogun State is unending as the two factions of the party, which held separate congresses, claimed to have picked the nomination forms of the Independent National Electoral Commission for those they elected.

In effect, the PDP headquarters may face a Herculean task in determining the authentic governorship, as well as other candidates of the party in the state in the April elections.

Reports had indicated that the candidates elected at the congress of a faction of the party loyal to Governor Gbenga Daniel were contacted to pick the nomination forms on Thursday, with Alhaji Gboyega Isiaka picking the form as the Ogun PDP governorship candidate.

But the governorship candidate elected at the congress loyal to former President Olusegun Obasanjo, Maj.-Gen. Adetunji Olurin (retd.), also claimed on Friday that he had picked and filled the INEC nomination form at the national headquarters of the party in Abuja.

The protracted crisis in the state PDP had compelled the feuding parties to elect different candidates from parallel congresses for the state and national elections. They also filed the names of their representatives to the national office of the PDP.

While the faction loyal to Daniel is led by Chief Joju Fadairo, the parallel exco is led by Chief Dayo Soremi, with the active support of Obasanjo and the Minister of Commerce and Industry, Senator Jubril Martins-Kuye.

While the faction loyal to Obasanjo conducted its primaries at the Olusegun Obasanjo Presidential Library, the Daniel faction conducted its own at the MKO Abiola Stadium, both in Abeokuta.

Soremi is regarded as the chairman of the ‘Harmonised state executive,’ with none of the members representing the Fadairo executive, after the latter was reportedly dissolved by the National Working Committee of the PDP under the sacked chairman, Dr. Okwesilieze Nwodo.

In an interview with SATURDAY PUNCH on the telephone on Friday, Olurin said he was the first to pick the form, saying his “opponent rushed down” to Abuja when he learnt that he (Olurin) had collected the INEC form.

The former military governor of Oyo State said that Senator Iyabo Obasanjo-Bello and others, who emerged victorious at the Soremi-led primaries, had also picked their INEC forms.

Olurin, who sounded confident about his chances in the emerging power play in the state, said the headquarters of the party would decide on the “authentic candidate” of the party on Monday when it is expected to forward the name of its candidate to INEC.

He said, “I’ve picked my form. There is no big deal about that. In fact, I’ve filled it and it is on its way to Abuja today (Friday). Yes, I didn’t come physically to pick it, but it was picked by the leader of my group for all of us that emerged winners at the primaries. By the grace of God, the form will get to the party headquarters either today or by Saturday.”

Fadairo, however, declared on Friday that the candidates elected during the primaries conducted under his watch were the only candidates issued with the INEC nomination forms.

He said, “To the best of my knowledge, only (Gboyega) Isiaka and (Lola) Abiola-Edewor (Ogun Central Senatorial candidate) collected the INEC nomination forms for the respective posts from the national headquarters in Abuja yesterday.

“The national party called me that the forms were ready. I informed the respective candidates, including the other senatorial candidates, the nine House of Reps candidates and the state House of Assembly candidates, and they went to Abuja to collect the INEC forms. There is no confusion there. It is very clear.”

Soremi described the reported issuance of the INEC nomination forms to the candidates elected at the congress organised by the Fadairo-led executive as “untrue.”

In a statement on Friday, he contended that an injunction obtained by the parallel body from a Federal High Court in Abuja on Wednesday had made the congress under the “dissolved Fadairo-led executive a nullity.”

He said, “We affirm that this can’t be true as our great party respects the rule of law and won’t be part of a sinister plot to enthrone impunity as a way of life in conducting the affairs of the PDP.

“To be sure, a Federal High Court sitting in Abuja has already stopped whatever charade the Joju Fadairo-led dissolved executive committee did in terms of congresses/primaries. Both the PDP National Secretariat and INEC were restrained from relating with the illegal Fadairo group.

“The order of the Federal High Court has been served on both INEC and the PDP National Secretariat.”

Justice Abdul Kafarati of the Federal High Court, Abuja, had, on Wednesday, restrained INEC and the PDP from validating the results of the governorship primaries conducted by the Daniel camp.

Kafarati gave the order following an ex-parte application by Olurin, Chief Babatunde Fadun, Mr. Dave Salako, Mr. Tunde Oladunjoye, Mr. Wale Solaja and Seun Adesanya.

He further restrained INEC and the PDP from making any pronouncement validating the results of the primaries conducted by the Fadairo-led executive, pending the determination of the originating summons.

The judge directed the electoral commission and the party to accept the results of the governorship primaries by the plaintiffs, according to their prayers.

Olurin believed that since the headquarters of the party was in court when the order was given, it would have no excuse not to obey it.

He said, “The Daniel group just wants to create confusion because the people there (PDP national headquarters) are aware of the court order, which forbids them from presenting any candidate for the elections.

“The leadership of the party is aware of the court order, so it either vacates the order or follows the rule of law by having nothing to do with the other group as ordered by the court. I know that we have a responsible party leadership who obeys the rule of law. I won the party governorship primaries and that is why I am also confident.”

Olurin, the former Sole Administrator of Ekiti State during the state of emergency in the Obasanjo Administration, added that (Senator Iyabo) Obasanjo-Bello and other candidates in the Fadairo faction had picked their INEC nomination forms.

“All of them, including Iyabo, have collected their forms and I can assure you that we’re confident that we would make it,” he added.

He said since the party was yet to come out openly that it had picked any candidate, it was wrong to assume that the candidates in his group had been dumped.

Soremi reasoned that the PDP had demonstrated its respect for the rule of law as the pronouncement of a State High Court was enough to sack the immediate past chairman of the party, Nwodo, which was obeyed.

“This, we believe, is what enabled the party’s governorship candidate in Ogun State, Chief Adetunji Olurin, to collect and fill the required INEC forms along with others who won in the party’s primaries,” he said.

The Commissioner of Police, Federal Capital Territory, Mr. John Haruna, allegedly slapped the Life Camp Divisional Police Officer, Mr. Mahmud Umar, for not providing adequate security for the ad hoc workers of the Independent National Electoral Commission and the Direct Data Capturing machines being used in the ongoing voter registration.

Haruna was reported to have redeployed Umar, a Chief Superintendent of Police, to the Area Commander’s office for an alleged dereliction of duty, which he could not explain to the satisfaction of the commissioner.

Trouble started for the embattled DPO when the commissioner got a report that the electoral officials and the DDC machines were not being given the necessary security by the police in the Life Camp area, contrary to the directives from the FCT command.

Haruna was said to have followed up on the report by visiting one of the centres, where he confirmed the absence of policemen.

Livid with anger, he was said to have summoned the DPO and demanded explanations for flouting a standing order, but the hapless officer could only mumble an apology, which incensed the commissioner.

He allegedly slapped the DPO for his “incompetence” and thereafter ordered his immediate transfer from the post.

The FCT Police Public Relations Officer, Mr. Moshood Jimoh, could not be reached for comments as he neither responded to repeated calls to his cell phone nor replied the SMS sent to him.

A gang of gunmen suspected to be assassins on Friday shot dead the All Nigeria Peoples Party governorship candidate in Borno State, Madu Fannami and six others.

The details of the killings were still sketchy at press time, but the Commissioner of Police in charge of the state police command, Alhaji Mohammed Abubakar, confirmed the incident.

Abubakar told the News Agency of Nigeria in Maiduguri that among the seven persons killed by the gunmen was a little boy, as well as a younger brother of Governor Ali Modu Sheriff.

He said the police had evacuated and deposited all the corpses at the University of Maiduguri Teaching Hospital mortuary.

The police boss said investigation into the killings had started by the command, adding that for now, no arrest had been made in connection with the incident.

The Nigeria Army had earlier placed its officers and men on red alert over the spate of killing of its men in Maiduguri by unidentified gunmen.

Igbo traders in the state had recently ordered the closure of their shops to protest the indiscriminate killing of their members in Maiduguri by the gunmen.

Meanwhile, President Goodluck Jonathan in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia, on Friday received with shock the news of the killings.

The President, who is in Addis Ababa to attend the 16th African Union Summit, condemned the act.

Reacting to the killings in a statement by his spokesman, Mr. Ima Niboro, the President directed security agencies to apprehend those behind the act.

The statement read in part, “(President) Jonathan unreservedly condemns these killings and wants security agencies to find those behind the act.

“The President maintains that the era of do-or-die politics in Nigeria is over, and those who want to take us back to that arbitrary past have no place in modern Nigeria.

“The President condoles with the government and people of Borno State, as well as the families of those who were killed in cold blood and prays Allah to grant repose to their souls.”

Complete Sports can exclusively report today that national U-23 Eagles coach, will earn a sum of N2 million as monthly salary.

The former Super Eagles coach was recently appointed by the Nigeria Football Federation, NFF to handle the U-23 Eagles side with a mandate to qualify Nigeria for the up coming All Africa Games and 2012 Olympic Games in London.

A reliable source in the marketing department of the football house told Complete Sports that the soccer tactician who led Nigeria to the 2006 Africa Cup of Nations in Egypt, demanded for more than that amount during his negotiation with the NFF but the football federation insisted on N2 million which the former Super Eagles captain eventually accepted.

Eguavoen initially pressed for an approval of a bigger pay package in the neighbourhood of N3m which is the monthly emolument of coach ’s assistant, Simon Kalika in the Super Eagles. The NFF has apparently graded the office of the U-23 Eagles head coach lower than that of Super Eagles assistant coach.

“NFF is going to pay Eguavoen the sum of Two Million Naira as monthly salary and the amount was agreed at after both parties met recently to negotiate. Though, Eguavoen demanded for more, NFF made it clear that they can only pay N2 million with cogent reasons and he later accepted,” says the source.

It would be recalled that Super Eagles coach, Samson Siasia will earn a sum of N5 million as monthly salary, his foreign assistant, Simon Kalika will earn N3 million while the football house is yet to agree on what the two Nigerian assistants, Ike Shorunmu and Salisu Yusuf will earn as salaries.

Eguavoen is however expected to officially commence duty this month with preparation for the All Africa Games qualifier in March.

THE late President Umaru Yar’Adua did a kidney transplant in 2002 as governor of Katsina State, but avoided another one as president for fears causing unrest, according to diplomatic cables released by WikiLeaks.

The cables claimed former Minister of Agriculture and Water Resources Sayyadi Abba Ruma donated his kidney for the transplant.

The cables suggested Nigeria’s top power brokers in the (PDP) knew about Yar’Adua’s condition, but still propped him up to become the presidential candidate in 2007.

Aides to the president stuffed his clothes to hide his weight loss and used makeup to hide his pallor, the cables claim, but his illness ultimately led to a long absence from that fuelled public discontent.

Yar’Adua died last May, propelling Vice-President Goodluck Jonathan into the presidency. Jonathan recently became the ruling party’s presidential candidate for the coming April election.

“What is clear is that the president’s health is a matter of growing concern, particularly on the minds of the northern elite,” a diplomatic cable from February 2009 reads. “We have noted a considerable uptick in what appears to be behind-the-scenes machinations and back-room dealing.”

WikiLeaks publicly released the cables late Saturday night. A spokesman at the United States (US) Embassy in Abuja, said officials would have no comment on anything released by the website.

A diplomatic cable from June 2008 claimedYar’Adua first began experiencing renal failure in 1999, shortly after he became governor. The cable said German company Julius Berger, one of the dominant road construction firms in Nigeria, set up a dialysis clinic in Yar’Adua’s home. The firm later flew German experts in and out of Nigeria to privately treat Yar’Adua, the cables claimed.

The discolorations long noticed on Yar’Adua’s face, fuelling rumours about his ill health, came from the steroids doctors gave him to help his body accept the transplant, according to the cables.

Ruma denied the cable claim, calling WikiLeaks a “witch-hunting device” and “a strategy for blackmail.”

“It never happened,” Ruma told The Associated Press last night. “It’s not true. It’s malicious. It’s mischievous.

IF global whistle-blowers, Wikileaks, releases the names of Nigerian public officials who have money stashed away in Swiss banks, the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission () will ensure a thorough probe of such persons and bring the guilty ones among them to trial.

The spokesman of the anti-graft agency, Mr. Femi Babafemi, declared yesterday that the EFCC would go beyond the “naming” of such persons to “shaming” them, through proper prosecution.

Babafemi, in a telephone interview with the Sunday Compass, said that the commission had already initiated steps to take advantage of the opportunity that Wikileaks is expected to present with the planned release, to have a probe into the accounts of Nigerians in the Swiss Banks and clarify the sources of those monies.

The development followed details that Nigeria’s treasury looters with secret Swiss bank accounts may be revealed in the latest round of documents to be published by whistle-blowers.

According to information obtained from the website of Wikileaks by the Sunday Compass, yesterday evening, a Swiss banker, Rudolf Elmer, has handed over what he said are secret Swiss banking records as well as the individual holders of the accounts.

The Swiss prosecutors’ office said on Friday that Elmer would be detained till tomorrow. He had on Wednesday been convicted of breaching banking secrecy by passing on private client data to the tax authorities and of threatening employees at his former firm, Julius Baer, a conviction that he has appealed.

A judge will announce today whether Elmer will be held for longer on remand as his action is threatening to expose whar has been regarded as a $2 trillion wealth management industry of Switzerland.

According to reports, “those on the list include the late Head of State, Sani Abacha, and several politicians – and about 2,000 clients’ records are included, but because of the way trusts and corporations are set up, the number of individuals involved cannot be determined.”

But an unfazed Elmer simply said: “I think, as a banker, I do have the right to stand up if something is wrong.”

Babafemi told the Sunday Compass that the EFCC was excited about the revelation from the the Wikileaks, saying that the situation would avail the Commission the opportunity to have a peep into details of Nigerians who have accounts in banks in Switzerland, and also probe the source of those monies.

He said, “We have been monitoring the situation and we are collaborating with officials of other international anti-graft agencies to track down the identities of Nigerians behind those accounts and see if monies deposited in the accounts are from corrupt ends.”

Switzerland has a policy of secretive banking in which monies deposited into any of the banks in the country are shielded from the rader of the interpol and other criminal investigation entities in the world.

Given this background, a lot of treasury loot from Nigeria and many other countries are believed to have found their ways into many of the banks in Switzerland. It had become impossible for the EFCC and other anti-fraud organisations in the world to have access into the details of those accounts.

Elmer insists that he wants to, “let society know what I do know and how this system works because it is damaging our society in the way that money is moved and hidden in offshore jurisdictions.”

Elmer stated on his website that he wants to “challenge Swiss Bank Secrecy at the European Court of Human Rights and the Swiss courts.”

He has worked at six offshore banking centres, and has been engaged in a long-running battle with Swiss banks over secrecy.

It could be recalled, for instance, that the United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime (UNODC) disclosed in Abuja on May 20, 2009 that up to $450 million of the over $3 billion allegedly looted by Abacha could not be traced.

The disclosure was made by Tim Daniel, a legal expert from the United Kingdom brought in by UNODC to help the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) draft the Bill on Non-Conviction Based Forfeiture of Proceeds and Instrumentalities of Unlawful Activity.

Daniel announced that even though there was proof the $450 million was stacked away somewhere, it was yet to be traced.

Apart from the $1.9 billion recovered from the Abacha family by the Federal Government, it is believed that monies looted by Nigeria’s public office holders are kept in the Swiss banks and the recent development is expected to open a vista of discoveries of other Nigerians who have looted from the treasury.
