yesterday challenged his main election opponents to another round of debate. He also said that he was yet to receive the Freedom of Information Bill (FOI) recently passed by the National Assembly saying anytime it gets to him, he would not hesitate to sign it into law.

“FOI bill has not come to me and if it comes to me, I have no reservation to pass it,” he said yesterday night while responding questions from moderators in a presidential debate organized by Nigeria Election Debate Group and broadcast live by media under the supervision of the Broadcasting Organization of Nigeria (BON).

Jonathan, who faced the moderators alone after the boycott by three other presidential candidates, took time to explain his absence at the NN24 debate which his opponents, the presidential candidates of the Congress for Progressive Change (CPC), General Muhammadu Buhari; Action Congress of Nigeria (CAN), and that of the All Nigeria People’s Party (ANPP) Ibrahim Shekarau attended.

He said it was not his making not to attend the NN24 debate but because of his tight schedule as President and  the security implication of  his appearance in every single debate organized by a medium that “have limited reach.”

“More than twenty bodies indicated interest for debates but as a President, I cannot attend all. I was told that the reach of the medium (NN24) was limited,” he said.

The President, who described himself in his introduction as a “humble Nigerian” and the “most qualified candidate” for the presidential elections, said he doesn’t have the luxury to attend all debates.

Responding to speculation that his absence at the NN24 debate was a tactic to escape giving account of his stewardship, he said, “today Nigerians know that the President is not ruining away from giving account of his stewardship.”

On political violence, the President warned against violence noting that politicians who are encouraging violence should desist or face the wrath of the law, adding that security agencies are on alert to respond to any act of violence before and during the elections.

Jonathan spoke mainly on power, education, security, employment, economy, budget, revenue mobilization and allocation as well as women empowerment.

He said said if given the mandate again he would continue with what his predecessor, late Umaru Musa Yar’adua started, noting that he would lay emphasis on stabilizing power sector as the most critical sector of the economy.

On the delay in the passage of the budget, he blamed the National Assembly for passing the budget late hence the delay in its implementation.

He promised to strengthen institutions to fight corruption, noting that the current anti-graft agencies- ICPC and EFCC were all the creation of the PDP.

He said despite the fact the anti-graft institutions  were established to fight corruption, the fight should not be left to the institution and promised to deal with corrupt public servants and politicians. “I will get external auditors to get what we are spending if the local ones fail.”

He also promised to give women challenging jobs and make sure they play their role in national development.

Police in Borno State yesterday stormed a house suspected to be the hideout of members in Damaturu and engaged them in a gun battle.

Seven suspected members of the group were also arrested in Maiduguri in connection with the stampede at the venue of the All Nigeria Peoples Party (ANPP) rally which left five persons dead.

Borno State Police Commissioner, Muhammed Abubakar, disclosed these yesterday while addressing newsmen in Maiduguri. According to the police commissioner, one of the members arrested, Baba Gana Mohammed, led the police to the hideout in Damaturu.

He said the gunmen engaged the police in a serious gun battle and threw deadly explosives at the police before they ran away after bombing the house.

He said Imman Abubakar Mohammed Shekau, the alleged leader of the group, escaped after they bombed the house which was believed to be their hideout.

Abubakar said two AK 47 rifles, many rounds of ammunitions and deadly explosives including bombs were recovered from the scene.

“The police combined team was sighted by the hoodlums on their way to the hideout, as a result, the fundamentalists started shelling explosives on the team. In the process, they set the house ablaze while bombs continued to explode and escaped,” the commissioner said.

He added that the anti-bomb squad had been drafted to the scene to recover more explosives.

The police boss said two women who are wives to the lieutenant to Shekau, the leader of the Boko Haram sect were arrested after the raid on the house.

He said the suspected members arrested in Maiduguri confessed to be responsible for the sporadic gunshots at Ramat Square venue of the ANPP rally and the robbery incident at Wulari junction and Gwange area in Maiduguri.

The two women arrested in Damaturu confessed to be wives of members of the sect.

One of them named Hadiza told newsmen that she was the younger sister of one of the wives of Muhammed Yussuf, the late leader of the sect.

NIGERIANS evacuated from Libya yesterday staged a protest at the Murtala Muhammed International Airport (MMIA) hajj camp section of the airport over luggage that has not arrived two weeks after they were taken out of war-torn Libya.

The protesters in their hundreds, who ran amok at the hajj camp, abused and insulted government officials claiming that they have been abandoned, asked for the luggage left in Libya.

One of them who spoke to our reporter said that it was wrong for the Federal government to bring them back after they have lost everything without the little possession they have left.

However speaking to the angry protesters at the Hajj Camp where they have camped since they were evacuated from Libya by the United Nations (UN), Assistant Commissioner of Police Airport Command Operations Mr. Omololu Bishi in a bid to placate them told the returnees that the government would ensure that their luggage arrives today.

“We will beg them that by tomorrow, they should bring your luggage, it is not a normal movement, if not, your luggage would have come with you” he said.

He however thanked them for exercising patience adding that the UN was more concerned about saving their lives first before their luggage.

“Libya is now a war zone, it is UN that has brought you from the war zone, in fact, UN says life first, they cannot carry luggage and people and for your information Libya is now a no flight zone”

“You people should be happy that you are alive and you should be giving thanks to God as well as FAAN security for providing accommodation for you people” he added.

One of the returnees Mr. Ehis Arebu who was contacted said,”I regret coming back to Nigeria, I have lost everything and this shirt and trouser that I am putting on is all that I have” he claimed.

According to him “I have being in this Hajj Camp for the past two weeks, the NEMA officials are still saying the same thing, they have not brought our luggage except for the few ones that came in yesterday with some people”

“I have three luggages and I have not even seen one of them, in fact Nigeria claims to be the giant of Africa, we are the giant of Africa from the back” he added.

has warned members of the ruling Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) against any attempt to rig the forthcoming presidential election in his favour. “I am a PDP person but if PDP is involved in violent campaigns, you have to condemn such very strongly and clearly. I have told my PDP family that nobody should rig for me. We must conduct free and fair general elections, and every vote of the electorate must count come April,” Jonathan said.

He gave the warning Monday night at the Presidential Villa, Abuja when he received a group of 21 leaders of civil society organisations on courtesy call.

“We must all collectively condemn electoral violence because if we damage the country, then we lose collectively. You must stand up against electoral violence and rigging of election irrespective of political parties,” he said.

He said government’s confidence on the integrity of members of civil society groups has been demonstrated in the appointment of two civil society advocates, Prof. Attahiru Jega as Chairman of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) and Dr. Sam Amid as Chairman of the Nigerian Electricity Regulatory Commission (NERC), to oversee critical aspects of national life.

The President said government will continually engage civil society groups constructively to fast-track national growth and development through the Special Adviser to the President on Relations with Civil Society, Chineme Ume-Ezeoke, who was also present at the meeting.

The Council of State yesterday gave the go-ahead for a massive deployment of security apparatus across the country during the general elections, a decision the police authorities say would lead to the deployment of 240,000 personnel nationwide. Based on the plan announced after a meeting of the council, riot and conventional police, military personnel and other security agencies would be in the field beginning 48 hours before each of the three sets of the elections, beginning with the National Assembly election on Saturday, followed by the presidential poll a week after and governorship/state legislative elections on April 16.

The Council of State, which is the highest government advisory body and has the country’s former leaders among its membership, also approved a crackdown on the rising wave of political violence heralding the elections, according to officials who briefed reporters after the meeting at the Presidential Villa in Abuja.

The council took the decisions yesterday after it was briefed by National Security Adviser Patrick Azazi, INEC chairman Attahiru Jega and Inspector General of Police Hafiz Ringim on the level of their agencies’ commitment to the elections.

presided over the meeting, which was also attended by five former presidents and heads of state, state governors and two former chief justices of Nigeria.

Kwara State Governor Bukola Saraki,  who  briefed newsmen alongside his counterparts Danjuma Goje of Gombe and Peter Obi of Anambra, the INEC chairman and Ringim, said instead of fomenting trouble, politicians should be ready to accept the outcome “either to win gallantly or even to lose gallantly.”

He said the council “pledged to a free and fair election that is violence-free…. We all took a pledge that this will continue at the state level as governors to ensure that our utterances, all candidates, particularly those that were present at the Council of State to ensure that our utterances are such that will unite the country and not to overheat the polity.”

Speaking on INEC’s preparations, Prof. Jega said the electoral commission is “prepared adequately in terms of logistics, in terms of the training of our staff and in term of effective liaison with security agencies in order to provide security before, during and after the elections.”

He said voting would start by 12.30pm and stops when all voters on the queue have voted.

Clarifying his earlier statement on whether voters could stay behind after voting, Jega said he never meant to say the voters should wait to “defend their votes” but that people willing to stay back could do so as long as they conduct themselves peacefully.

“Obviously, some political parties have been urging their members to wait and defend their votes and that has been misconstrued as the position of INEC. I want to state categorically that we as INEC are not urging people to wait and defend their votes in quote the way people are interpreting it and if anybody chooses to stay they have to make sure that they are non-violent, that they are peaceful and that they obey the rules, anybody who cannot do that should not stay.

“In fact as much as possible it is advisable that anybody who has cast his vote should just quietly leave the venue and go back to his or her place but if they choose to vote and they choose to watch the collation process, they must demonstrate clearly that they are of good behavior, they are non-violent, otherwise the security agencies would arrest and prosecute those found to be violent,” he said.

On the state of security, Ringim said, “There shall be patrol in and around all voting areas by armed policemen as well as armed military officers. The fact remains that this country as well as the law enforcement agents representing this country are determined and will not allow any act of thuggery, any act of violence and any act that would disrupt the conduct of free, fair, rancour-free, peaceful as well as acceptable general elections.”

When contacted on the number of policemen to be deployed, Police Force Public Relations Officer Olusola Amore told Daily Trust that over 240,000 personnel would be deployed to maintain law and order during the elections.
