A RARE strain of AIDS virus previously found only among a few people in Cameroon has most probably spread outside the West African country, according to a case reported by The Lancet today.

The first identified infection with the so-called “group N” strain of the human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) was found in 1998 in a Cameroonian woman who had progressed to AIDS.

Since then, more than 12,000 HIV-infected patients living in Cameroon have been tested for group-N infection, but only 12 cases, including two couples, have ever been found.

The new case, reported by French doctors, involves a 57-year-old man who was admitted to the Saint Louis Hospital Paris in January suffering from fever, rash, swollen lymph glands and genital ulceration.

The patient had high levels of a virus in the HIV-1 family, but tests to pinpoint the particular strain proved inconclusive. On February 9, the patient developed facial paralysis.
The French team then carried out further tests on blood samples, which were found to react in an antibody essay of the N strain.

Tracing his sexual history, the researchers believe the infection was “probably” acquired from intercourse with a partner in Togo, from which he had just returned.

“This case of HIV-1 group-N primary infection indicates that this rare group is now circulating outside Cameroon, which emphasises the need for rigorous HIV epidemiological monitoring,” says the doctors, led by Professor Francois Simon.

The finding is important because the patient suffered not only severe symptoms but also a fast-track decline in his immune system, as shown in the number of his CD4 white blood cells.

He was given a powerful five-drug combination of antiretrovirals, to which he responded, but needs close monitoring in the future, the letter said.

Group N may have leapt to humans from chimpanzees, possibly through the handling of bushmeat infected with the simian equivalent of HIV, scientists say.

It is one of four sub-types of virus gathered in the HIV-1 family, the others being M, which is by far the most prevalent, O and P. The P strain, like O and N very rare, may have jumped to humans from gorillas, according to a study published in 2009.

There is also a minority viral family called HIV-2, which also may have passed to humans from animal primates.

POLICE say they have arrested a woman in the southern Pakistani city of Karachi suspected of murdering her husband, then chopping his body into pieces and boiling them to try to get rid of the evidence.

Police officer Khalid Nadeem Baig said today that 42-year-old Zainab Bibi told authorities she killed her husband because he tried to sexually assault her 17-year-old daughter from another marriage.

Baig said Bibi sedated her husband by mixing sleeping pills in his tea and strangled him with rope. She and her nephew allegedly cut up her husband and boiled the flesh.

Police say they discovered her plot after neighbours complained about a bad smell coming from her home. They also arrested the nephew.

AN obese German mother gave birth to a gigantic baby boy without the help of a C-section, and named him “Jihad.”

The newborn child — the mother’s 14th — weighed in at 13 pounds (six kilograms) to set a new record for Germany’s heaviest naturally born baby, news website The Local reported overnight.

His 40-year-old mom, who weighs 528 pounds (240 kilograms), was advised to go under the knife because of the high risks involved with such a large baby, but pushed for a natural delivery Wednesday at Berlin’s Charite hospital.

Jihad’s giant size is believed to be the result of his mother’s untreated gestational diabetes. Doctors believe the woman was aware of her condition, but ate too much sweet food, resulting in her excessively high blood sugar level.

The mother previously had given birth to nine boys and four girls, four of whom were born with birth weights heavier than 11 pounds (five kilograms).

Babies over 8.8 pounds (four kilograms) are judged overweight at birth.

Syrian rebels held secret talks with Libya’s new authorities on Friday, aiming to secure weapons and money for their insurgency against President Bashar al-Assad’s regime,

At the meeting, which was held in Istanbul and included Turkish officials, the Syrians requested “assistance” from the Libyan representatives and were offered arms, and potentially volunteers.

“There is something being planned to send weapons and even Libyan fighters to Syria,” said a Libyan source, speaking on condition of anonymity. “There is a military intervention on the way. Within a few weeks you will see.”

The Telegraph has also learned that preliminary discussions about arms supplies took place when members of the Syrian National Council [SNC] – the country’s main opposition movement – visited Libya earlier this month.

“The Libyans are offering money, training and weapons to the Syrian National Council,” added Wisam Taris, a human rights campaigner with links to the SNC.

The disclosure came as rebels raided an air force base outside the city of Homs and killed six pilots, according to a statement by the country’s military.

Rebel attacks have become daily occurrences since the onset of the insurrection. The conflict has claimed at least 3,500 lives, mainly as part of a crackdown by the government.

Syria’s regime has continued to defy pressure from the Arab League, ignoring yesterday’s deadline to accept the deployment of 500 human rights observers, raising the possibility that economic sanctions may be agreed this weekend.

Last month, Libya’s interim government became the first in the world to recognise Syria’s opposition movement as the country’s “legitimate authority”.

Large shipments of weapons have not yet been sent, said activists, mainly because of logistical difficulties. But proposals for a “buffer zone” inside Syria, monitored by the Arab League, or the likely emergence of an area inside the country controlled entirely by rebels could solve this problem.

“The [Libyan] council’s offer is serious,” said Mr Taris. Turkey, which has denounced President Assad’s regime, is already sheltering about 7,000 Syrian opposition activists, including the leader of the Free Syrian Army, the nascent rebel movement, in a “safe zone” along Turkey’s border with Syria.

Sources in the Libyan town of Misurata suggested that some weapons may already have been sent. Some smugglers were caught selling small arms to Syrian buyers in Misurata, said a man who trafficked guns to Libya’s rebels during the country’s civil war.

Post-conflict Libya is awash with arms, many of them taken from the vast military stores maintained by Col Mummar Gaddafi’s regime. Kalashnikov assault rifles, modern missiles and even tanks found their way into Libya.

Libyans feel closely aligned to the Syrian cause, said Hameda al-Mageri, from the Tripoli Military Council. “Bashar sent Gaddafi weapons when he was fighting us. There are hundreds of people who want to go to fight in Syria, or help in other ways if they can.”

But Libyan officials deny the claims. “This is what you hear in the street,” said Ramadan Zarmoh, the leader of the Misurata military council. “Officially there is none of this. I would never send any fighters to fight outside the country.”

Ministers from the Arab League are expected to meet in Cairo over the weekend to consider sanctions on Syria.

David Cameron, the Prime Minister, and his Qatari counterpart, Sheikh Hamad bin Jassem al-Thani, on Friday pledged to keep up talks with Syrian opposition groups in an attempt to support a transition to a stable democracy.

“They were clear on the importance of the Syrian regime accepting the Arab League’s initiative to end the violence and they agreed on the need to continue talking to the Syrian opposition movements to support the transition to an inclusive and stable democracy,” a Downing Street spokesman said.

Measures under consideration are believed to include suspending all flights to Syrian airports, halting any transactions with the country’s central bank and freezing any Syrian government bank accounts. However, it remains unclear whether there is sufficient support to introduce them. Lebanon has publicly opposed sanctions.

Real Madrid moved six points clear in Spain after winning a fiery derby match against nine-man Atletico on Saturday and then seeing defending champions Barcelona suffer a shock first La Liga defeat this season.

Real marched to a 13th successive victory in all competitions, while Barca lost 1-0 at lowly Getafe — who had won just once in seven games.

Cristiano Ronaldo scored two penalties as Jose Mourinho’s side came from behind to win 4-1 at the Bernabeu, with Atletico having teenage goalkeeper Thibaut Courtois sent off in the 23rd minute for bringing down Karim Benzema when the French striker tried to go around him.

The 19-year-old was replaced by substitute keeper Sergio Asenjo, whose first job was to pick the ball out of the net after being beaten by Ronaldo.

Angel Di Maria made it 2-1 four minutes after the break when Ronaldo’s intended pass to Benzema fell in his path, and fellow Argentina international Gonzalo Higuain pounced on a mistake by Diego Godin in the 65th minute.

Godin was also sent off for an 81st-minute foul on Higuain, who had been put through by Ronaldo’s clever pass — and the Portugal forward sent Asenjo the wrong way from the spot to make it 4-1.

Atletico had not beaten Real for 12 years, but started the match promisingly as Adrian finished off a fine move to give the mid-table visitors the lead in the 15th minute.

Barcelona, seeking to win the league for the fourth season in a row, succumbed to a 67th-minute header from Getafe defender Juan Valera after being caught napping at a corner.

The Catalan side poured forward in search of a last-gasp equalizer, but Lionel Messi had an injury-time effort ruled out when substitute Seydou Keita was judged to be offside and then the Argentina star hit the post as he failed to match Ronaldo’s leading tally of 16 league goals.

Pep Guardiola’s team will be hoping to reduce Real’s lead in the first Clasico clash in the league this season in Madrid on December 10.

Third-placed Valencia bounced back from last weekend’s home defeat by Real by winning 2-1 at mid-table Rayo Vallecano.

Brazilian striker Jonas put Valencia ahead in the 21st minute and Argentine midfielder Tino Costa made it 2-0 on 56, while Raul Talmudo scored a late consolation.

The win left Valencia one point behind Barca after 13 rounds.

X Factor producers have come under fire over rumours thatMarcus Collins has been getting backstage Botox injections.

According to The Mirror, the 23-year-old (yes, 23!!) has undergone four face-freezing treatments since this year’s show began.

Some even suggested that the singer’s latest round of jabs had gone wrong, forcing him to wear a hairpiece to cover what looked like a receding hairline (a claim that has since been denied).

Medical experts and TV campaigners alike have reacted to the news with horror.

Lesley Reynolds Khan, from the Harley Street Skin Clinic, told the paper, “The people looking after him should be saying No. He has a whole lifetime to worry about lines.”

And Vivienne Paterson of Mediawatch claimed the singer is setting a “bad example for young viewers” by resorting to Botox at such a young age.

An X Factor insider revealed that Marcus had admitted to having treatment but insisted the jabs were not set up by show bosses.

The source said, “He is really embarrassed his secret is coming out. He denies having a hairpiece.”

What do you think – should X Factor bosses put a stop to Marcus’ Botox treatments? Leave your comments below…

Dim Chukwuemeka Odumegwu Ojukwu is dead

Chukwuemeka Odumegwu-Ojukwu  born on 4 November 1933 at Zungeru in northern Nigeria to Sir Louis Phillippe Odumegwu Ojukwu, a businessman from Nnewi in south-eastern Nigeria died in London in the early hours after a long illness at Royal Berkshire Hospital  in the UK.

Odumegwu-Ojukwu also known as  Ikemba Nnewi was said to have died in the UK after months in hospital for the treatment of a serious stroke he had suffered late last year.

Chukwuemeka Odumegwu-Ojukwu  born on 4 November 1933 at Zungeru in northern Nigeria  was  imprisoned for assaulting a white British colonial teacher, who was humiliating a black woman, at King’s College in Lagos began his educational career in Lagos.

At 13, his father sent him overseas to study in Britain, first at Epsom College, in Surrey and later earned a Masters degree in history at Lincoln College, Oxford University and returned to colonial Nigeria in 1956.

In 1957 the Ikemba Nnewi joined  the Nigerian Army as one of the first and few university graduates.  Ojukwu was among the 15 Nigerians officers out of the  250 officers the Nigerian Military Forces had then.

After serving in the UN peacekeeping force in the then Congo under Maj.-Gen. Johnson Thomas Aguiyi-Ironsi, Ojuwkwu was promoted to Lieutenant-Colonel in 1964 and was posted to Kano, where he was in charge of the 5 Battalion of the Nigerian Army.

Aguiyi-Ironsi appointed Odumegwu-Ojukwu military governor of the defunct Easter Region on Jan. 17, 1966.

After the first military coup of 1966 and the counter coup that followed, Odumegwu-Ojukwu declared the defunct Eastern Region a sovereign state to be known as Biafra.

In the declaration and during his public address to the people of Biafra, he said: “Having mandated me to proclaim on your behalf, and in your name, that Eastern Nigeria be a sovereign independent republic, now, therefore I, Lt.-Col. Chukwuemeka Odumegwu-Ojukwu, Military Governor of Eastern Nigeria, by virtue of the authority, and pursuant to the principles recited above, do hereby solemnly proclaim that the territory and region known as and called Eastern Nigeria together with her continental shelf and territorial waters, shall, henceforth, be an independent sovereign state of the name and title of The Republic of Biafra.’’

On July 6, 1967, the then military Head of State, Col. Yakubu Gowon declared war and attacked Biafra in a bid to stop Ojukwu’s secessionist attempt.

The war lasted 30 months and ended on Jan. 15, 1970.

As the war was wearing out, Ojukwu went on exile and stayed away for 13 years. He was granted state pardon by President Shehu Shagari, a decision which was trailed by the deceased’s triumphant return in 1982.

Odumegwu-Ojukwu was married to Miss Intercontinental 1989 Bianca Onoh. They have children.

The National Leader of the All Progressives Grand Alliance, Dim Chukwuemeka Odumegwu Ojukwu is dead.
He died in the early hours of Saturday at a United Kingdomhospital.
He was aged 78.

His death was confirmed in a statement by the family titled DIM CHUKWUEMEKA ODUMEGWU-OJUKWU IS DEAD signed by Ojukwu’s son, Chukwuemeka.

“After a protracted and brave fight against stroke, the People’s General, Ikemba Nnewi, Dikedioranma Ndigbo, Odenigbo Ngw,  Ezeigbo Gburugburu,  Dim Chukwuemeka Odumegwu-Ojukwu died in the early hours of yesterday in London.

“We thank all those that showed concern in our period of difficulties, starting from President Goodluck Jonathan. We thank in a special way the Governor of Anambra State, Mr. Peter Obi, who went above and beyond the call to duty to look after him.

“Besides paying the hospital bills, he visited London on a monthly basis to see him. He was there yesterday and only came back this morning to receive the news, whereupon he entered the next available flight back to London. He even had to fly the Economy class since other classes were fully booked. We thank him for the sacrifices.

“We thank all Nigerians for their solidarity, especially those that continued to pray for him. May you continue to pray for the repose of his soul.“ Further details shall be made available.” the family stated

Governor Obi of Anambra State in a statement by his Special Assistant, Valentine Obienyen titled OUR FATHER IS GONE  also confirmed Ojukwu’s death

Which he said occurred in the early hours of today, November 26, 2011.

“With Ojukwu’s death, the entire Igbo race, at home and in the Diaspora as well as Nigerians have lost a treasure.

“He was one of the most forthright personalities Nigeria has ever had. He believed in a Nigeria where justice and equity should reign and devoted his life to their pursuit of that ideal as if he was under a spell.

“While alive Ezeigbo Gburugburu was such a subject of history that it makes little sense to start contemplating how history will remember him.

“He is worthy of Ceaser’s own summary of his victory in Pontus (former Asia Minor), Veni, vedi, vici, (I came, I saw, I conquered). Ojukwu came, saw and conquered, leaving for us vital lessons in patriotism and nationalism.

“With his death, part of every Igbo man has also died. We shall continue to remember him in our prayers as we work out further details in consultation with his family and other stakeholders”.
