The Fashola administration’s increment of fees for Lagos State University (LASU) students and toll collection on the Lekki-Epe Expressway that commence on Sunday,December 18,2011,are still eliciting divergent reactions among concerned Nigerians, stakeholders, and activists.

Governor Babatunde Fashola had on November 14, this year, while presenting the 2012 Appropriation Bill to the Lagos State House of Assembly, disclosed that the state has so far spent N4 billion as compensation to the Lekki Concession Company (LCC) Limited for suspending toll collections on the road last year.

Investigation revealed that the Lekki Concession Company (LCC) Limited is allegedly owned by former Governor of Lagos State, Bola Tinubu.

Bola Tinubu is said to be quietly and stealthily perfecting a scheme that will transform the economy of South West states an extension of his business empire.

Asiwaju’s business interests is said to span Real estates, Construction, Aviation, Hospitality and Communication.

The toll rates charged are as follows: Motorbikes – N50. Sedans – N120. Vans/small buses/Suvs – N150. Commercial buses – N80. Light trucks and two axle buses – N250. Heavy duty trucks – N350.

Mr. Simon Elisha a Lagos-based human resource consultant said “We are now in a country where we come out and are afraid of so many things, especially our security. We cannot even drive our cars because of what is happening now. I can’t imagine myself going to the Island for example and I have to pay toll three times. When I am coming back, it has to be the same thing. I will pay N150 for tolling and it amounts to about N450 going to the Island alone; coming back, I think it is another N450. That means in a day, I am paying about N900 for tolling. If I forget something at home, I have to come back and pay again and it will be N1800 a day.

Findings revealed that Police shot rifles and fired tear gas at protesters who were demonstrating against toll roads on Saturday.

Two residents are said to be in critical condition following the police crackdown while 25 protesters were arrested and are being detained at the Force Criminal Investigation Department, Alagbon.

Police officers also used batons to assault an Associated Press photographer who was covering the event. His camera equipment was taken before he was thrown into the back of a police truck.

The photographer was released several hours later without charge, and was treated for blunt-force trauma injuries to his neck, shoulder and knee.

The protest rally led by the Chairman of the Lekki Phase 1, Residents Association, Chief Wole Akala with other members of the executives and hordes of protesters including residents, civil rights activists and student bodies in tow, began from Epe axis of Lagos in the early hours of Saturday.

The residents had mobilised men and materials including the Lekki Peninsula Phase 1 Residents Association Security Patrol vehicle with the plate number, XS611 BDG which they parked at strategic locations.

However, just as the protest was still gathering steam, a team of policemen apparently acting on the orders of their superiors, arrested Akala at the Lekki Phase 1 roundabout and drove him away in a Lagos State Environment Task Force Black-maria vehicle with plate number LA76 BA01.

While recalling the ordeal with the police, Mr. Ebun Adegboruwa, a member of the Lekki Resident Association, said: “We had already spread mats near the kerbs. We didn’t go anywhere near the toll gate. There were thugs allegedly recruited by LCC who infiltrated our midst and began to beat up our members. And the police decided to seize the opportunity by firing live bullets into the air. And they started beating up our members. It was thereafter police started shooting live bullets into the crowd. Two of our members we are lying critically ill now. We don’t know their fate as I speak to you.”

According to Adebgoruwa, “Right now, about 25 of our members have been arrested and taken to CID Panti, Yaba. We don’t know whether they are going to charge them to court. They have kept them incommunicado without contact with their lawyers and family members.”

Among the journalists who had a raw deal with the policemen include a reporter with Channels TV, whose camera was destroyed while a reporter with LTV was beaten up and his camera seized. Mr. Suleiman Hussein, photographer with Compass had his camera seized by policemen.

An unconfirmed report however had it that one of the protesters whose identity was yet to be known suffered a fatal injury and bled to the death.

LASU students had earlier in the week protested around their campus along Lagos-Badagry express road, against the hike in their school fees from about N30,000 to about N250,000.

In a recent chat with a celebrity blog,Kate Henshaw whom was also among protesters was quoted:‘If we are all thinking about safety then we will be quiet forever. If Mandela was thinking about safety then Jacob Zuma won’t be there now. If you don’t stand up for something, you’ll fall for anything. I’m not doing this for myself; I’m doing it for my children. They can’t just throw things our way and have us take it like that’.she said.

Lagosians It’s high time you know your right because is like Tinubu and Fashola are intentionally impoverishing the people and mortgaging the future of Lagos State.

A word they say is enough for the wise

“Today, (which was yesterday Monday Dec 19th) I want to congratulate all Nigerians on the successful launch of Nigeria’s satellite NigComSat-1R. This satellite will enhance our nation’s communications system and increase Internet bandwidth throughout the federation while substantially reducing the over $1 billion cost incurred from the usage of foreign owned satellites for e-commerce activities of both governmental and private sector users all of which are a fulfilment of the goals contained in our nation’s 25-year National Space Development Road-map.

There cannot be Transformation without technology and the technological benefits from this satellite will flow to all Nigerians whether rural or urban dweller and would also provide the infrastructure needed to provide cashless e-commerce transactions for all Nigerians thus opening up Nigerian businesses and enterprises to markets that are not limited by space or time.” GEJ

Thank you very much sir, we appreciate! Now how about not removing the fuel subsidy? We will appreciate that even more. Fuel scarcity is gradually creeping into Lagos. Fill your tanks guys, I hear the coming days will be hellish at the gas stations as they begin to hoard fuel pending when they can sell at over N100 after the fuel subsidy removal.

The Federal Government has said it is yet to fix a date for the commencement of the removal of petroleum subsidy. Briefing journalists after the last Federal Executive Council (FEC) meeting for the year, at the Presidential Villa, Abuja earlier today, Labaran Maku, the Minister of Information said the government was still engaging different groups in dialogue for a proper understanding of the subsidy issue.

According to him, “no take-off date has been announced. The truth of the matter is, our country is in a very difficult economic situation. To continue to run Nigeria with one third of the budget set to subsidise one product is absolutely a path to a greater difficulty for the economy. We have continued to be talking about this because every sector we opened up has produced results”.

“People who are emotionally talking about it are not actually addressing what we are saying. Let’s take the media, before now it was only NTA, until government deregulated broadcasting in the country. Before you could not set up a private radio station in this country or a television station, when government deregulated what do we have today? We have private television stations that are now competing with NTA and FRCN. If government decided to control broadcasting in the country all of you would have been out of jobs.”

Maku, who stated that the continuous increase in the nation’s domestic debt which is currently put at over N500 billion has made the decision of the removal of petroleum subsidy inevitable, said that the nation stands the risk of running into economic crisis if it fails to deregulate the oil and gas sector.

He lamented that after 33 years of investments in the oil and gas sector it was sad that Nigeria had not benefited by way of credible investments in the sector.

“If we have wasted time in the past, this is the time we need to take a decision. No leader in the world would want to punish citizens. The future holds promises because there is no sector that we have deregulated that has not succeeded. This is the path to growth, development and opportunity. This is the way to go,” the Minister said.

He further disclosed that Nigeria is the only country in the world with this level of oil and gas resources that had failed to deregulate the sector and urged Nigerians to understand the government’s decision to deregulate the sector.

“We are urging Nigerians to take a harder look at what the government has proposed. It will save Nigeria, it will create jobs and investment opportunities. We are calling for understanding on this issue given the budgetary constraints,” Maku appealed.

He said already the president has given directives that all existing refineries be given over to the original builders to turn them around to their original capacity. He also disclosed that three additional refineries will be built in Lagos, Kogi and Bayelsa states.

The new refineries are expected to be privately run to enhance local production and competition.

Maku said council, which was presided over by President Goodluck Jonathan, also approved $8.804 million, as payment for the full subscription of 62,000 units of shares allotted to the Federal Government in the Africa Reinsurance Corporation and a N2,582,787,557.23 plus $8,216,198.44, equivalent to N3,815,217,323.00 billion plus five per cent VAT of N190,760,866.10 for piping gas to the Alaoji power plant. The project has a completion period of seven months.

The Speaker of the Ebonyi State House of Assembly, Ikechukwu Nwankwo was impeached as the Speaker by 20 out of the 24 members of the House on Wednesday.

Chukwuma Nwazunku, representing Ebonyi North East constituency, was elected as the new speaker.

According to the house members, Nwankwo was impeached for fraudulent activities, incompetence and abuse of office.

Obasi Odefa, representing Onicha East constituency, moved the motion for the impeachment and it was seconded by Kingsley Ikoro, the Chief whip and member representing Afikpo North East constituency.

Odefa said that Nwankwo’s conduct was affecting the running of the House and thus the members were no longer comfortable with his conduct.

“We have the responsibility of defending our integrity to ensure we discharge our duties to the people without hindrances,” he said.

According to him, the incident was carried out in line with section 92(2c) of the 1999 constitution as amended, which “gives us the power to remove any speaker at the point we feel is necessary, provided we have two-thirds of the members in support”.

“The former speaker is hereby warned not to threaten the peace of the House. Any attempt to disrupt the peace of the House will see him prosecuted by anti-graft agencies.”

Odefa noted that the governor did not know about the action, as the members did not even contemplate the action during the meeting.

“Our meeting with the governor was reviewed and we discovered that there was more to it than we already know, which resulted in the action we took according,” he said.

The House also dissolved all standing committees and suspended its Chief accountant, while directing him to stop all transactions involving the House.

Nwazunku thanked his colleagues for electing him, promising to restore the integrity of the House through purposeful leadership ends.

GMC says the schools no longer meet accepted standards of practice in the UK

Medical graduates from nine universities in Nigeria will no longer be able to obtain licenses to practice in the United Kingdom, following a decision by the UK’s General Medical Council (GMC) to ban the higher institutions.

The GMC, a body of independent regulators which registers medical doctors to practise in the UK, took the decision to bar graduates from the nine universities from writing PLAB.

PLAB is the UK exam that enables non-UK Medical graduates to undertake post-graduate medical training in the country.

The affected graduates are those who graduated after December 10, 2010 from Ambrose Ali University, Ebonyi State University, Ladoke Akintola University of Technology (LAUTECH), Nnamdi Azikiwe University, University of Jos, University of Nigeria and the University of Port Harcourt.

It also applies to those who graduated on or after April 1, 2010 from Igbinedion University College of Health Sciences and the University of Benin.

According to Jason Day of the GMC’s press office, the schools were axed because they no longer meet the required standards for practise in the UK.
He added that the Medical and Dental Council of Nigeria (MDCN) had also advised that they suspend accreditation of some medical schools in the country.

“The decision only applies to students who graduated from those medical schools after the MDCN suspended their accreditation,” Day said

A group, Muslim Lawyers Association of Nigeria (MULAN) rose from their 5th annual general conference in Kaduna State, declaring that they will ensure that the introduction of Sharia legal system in the southern states as enshrined in the 1999 Constitution.

The group said this against the backdrop that it concerns the determination of Islamic personal laws as it relates to marriage, divorce and inheritance.

The lawyers also called for an end to the trial of the former Chief Security Officer (CSO) to the late Head of State, Gen. Sani Abacha, Major Hamza Al-Mustapha, demanding that the judicial process be accelerated to end his long travail and persecution.

In a communiuque at the end of the conference in Kaduna, MULAN said it would collaborate with the National Assembly to abrogate all discriminatory provisions in the constitution of Nigeria that tends to strengthen the settler/indigene dichotomy that has precipitated many crises in various parts of the country.

The communiqué signed by the National President of the body, Alhaji Tajudeen Oladoja, the body also urged the Federal Government not to hesitate to invoke its power under the constitution by declaring a state of emergency in any state of the federation plagued by ethno-religious crisis.

The group decried the alleged constant breach of the fundamental rights of Muslims across the country with impunity under the pretence of National security.

The association said: “It has become a routine exercise for security agencies to arrest, detained and harangued, intimidate and torture Muslims, especially those who wear long beards in the name of curbing the menace” and called on the security agencies not to be partisan when discharging their duties.

“They also called on security agents to respect the fundamental right of Nigerians and to desist from indiscriminate arrest and torture based on facial outlook and or dressing in the name of stemming the tide of ethno-religious crises in Nigeria.”

The body also called on the Federal Government and the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) to license non-interest banking for interested Nigerians, irrespective of their religious persuasions and not to be discouraged by critics of the ideal.

They also accused state government in the country especially those in the north of paying lip service to the formalisation of the Almajiri educational system thereby increasing the level of illiteracy in Nigeria, particularly in the north.

They also accused states in the southern parts of the country of failing to recognize the rights of Muslims to have their disputes adjudicated on the principles of sharia as enshrined in the constitution of the country and congratulate the National Assembly for criminalizing same-sex marriage.

They asked the government not to add to the hardship already existing in the country by removing fuel subsidy, asking the government to forget about the idea in the interest of the ordinary Nigerians.

A group of Facebook users who are unhappy about their profiles being used in adverts on the site, have been granted permission to proceed with a legal case against the social network.

Currently if a Facebook user clicks the ‘like’ button on a brand’s page on the site, the social network can use the image and name of that person in an advert endorsing the same company.

A US court, which previously refused to progress a case of several disgruntled Facebook members who were angered by this process, has overturned its decision.

The San Francisco Federal Court has now allowed the group of Facebook users to proceed with their class action suit which accuses the social network or unlawfully exploiting their preferences on the site for commercial gain and without their permission.

In a recent BBC documentary about Facebook, which received scores of complaints, presenter Emily Maitlis asked Elliot Schrage, Facebook’s head of global communications and public policy, about this type of activity on the site.

He said that by people clicking the ‘like’ button on brands’ Facebook pages, was them effectively giving their consent for their name to be allied to that company and endorsing it in a sponsored story or advert.

Facebook also uses the US First Amendment as a defence to the practice.

A Facebook spokesman said: “We are reviewing the decision and continue to believe that the case is without merit.”

The case is the first one of its kind to have made any progress in the courts. Previous similar cases have been thrown out or have failed.

However, if the case succeeds, it could mean a major change as to one of the ways Facebook makes money out of marketing brands.
