Benson Idahosa University (BIU) is one of Nigeria’s premier private universities and is currently ranked second by the National Universities Commission (NUC) among the nation’s private higher institutions.
BIU presently has affilliations, partnerships and sister university agreements with Oral Roberts University USA, the University of Delaware USA, and business departments of these universities are partnering with BIU to develope a premier undergraduate and graduate business school that will offer programs ranging from Entrepreneurship to Executive MBAs.
Benson Idahosa University is a Christian tertiary institution founded by Archbishop Benson Idahosa under the aegis of Church of God Mission International Inc.
After the founding of Church of God Mission International Incorporated in the 1960s, Archbishop Benson Idahosa received specific directives from God to venture into the provision of education beginning from the Nursery to the University level. This was not a time when there was a ban on the operation of tertiary institutions by private establishments. In 1977, having laid the groundwork for the nursery, primary and secondary education, in what is now Word of Faith Group of Schools, he received directives from God that he could begin to prepare for the provision of university education. He immediately acquired a wide expanse of land which he named the university site; he then interacted with the then Federal Military Government, which at first resisted his attempted incursion into an area coded a ‘No Go area’ because of the existing ban; but he pressurized the Government until the edict banning this aspect of education by private individuals or establishments was ammended.
Thus in 1992, Archbishop Benson Idahosa formally applied to the Honourable Minister of Education for a license to establish and operate a private university. With the amendment of the edict, the Special Committee on Private Universities (SCOPU) was constituted in the National Universities Commission (NUC).
While the Archbishop awaited the formal permission from the Government, he started the nucleus of the university which he named the Christian Faith University with the basic academic and administrative structures.
On April 27, 1994, the budding university took off with its first group of students. In February 2002, the Federal Government acting through the NUC granted the Christian Faith University license to operate as Benson Idahosa University (BIU), a recognized private tertiary institution in the Federal Republic of Nigeria.
Academic Faculties And Departments.
The University started out on February 12, 2002 when it was granted license to operate with two Faculties.
It however now has four Faculties namely:
1. Faculty of Social and Management Sciences (FSMS)
2. Faculty of Arts and Education (FAE)
3. Faculty of Basic and Applied Sciences (FBAS)
4. Faculty of Law (FL)
These Faculties together run eighteen (18) programmes.
In the 2007 accreditation exercise by the National Universities Commission (NUC) thirteen of the programmes which had attained maturity were assessed and all the thirteen programmes were accredited. All the programmes run by the university are approved by the National Universities Commission (NUC).
The programmes are as follows: Accounting; Business Administration; Economics; Banking and Finance; Political Science; Sociology and Anthropology; Computer Science; Agriculture; Biochemistry; Microbiology; Mathematics; Theology; Law; International Studies and Diplomacy, Physics; Information and Computer Systems (ICS); and Education programmes.
ADMINISTRATION.
The administrative structure of the University has the Chancellor and President, representing the Proprietors, at the apex. There is a Governing Council chaired by the Pro-Chancellor while the internal administrative structure is chaired by the Vice Chancellor.
