On 31ST December 1982 Barclays Bank International Limited sold its interest to Standard Bank PLC which came to be known as Standard Chartered Bank Africa PLC with effect from 15th October 1990. which was formerly referred to as the New Building Society was formed following the amalgamation of Central Africa Building Society, Commonwealth Century Building Society and First Permanent Building Society.

The New Building Society had been incorporated under the Building Societies Act on 7th February, 1964. At this time, there was only one branch. Since then, The Society continued to operate under this Act and raised funds from the public and advanced them by way of mortgage loans against the security of land and buildings. Standard Bank Malawi was established as a result of Standard Bank, through its subsidiary Stanbic Africa Holdings, acquiring a 60.18% interest in the Commercial Bank of Malawi Limited to become the majority shareholder. Consequently, Commercial Bank of Malawi Limited changed its name to Stanbic Bank and has made headway in revamping its operations to the international standard of the Standard Bank Group. On 1 June 2007, Stanbic Bank changed its name to Standard Bank Limited in order to realign and positively identify the bank with its parent bank, the Standard Bank Group of South Africa.
