Edo State governor, Adams Oshiomhole has expressed his willingness to personally ensure the resumption of talks between the Federal Government and striking university lecturers. He offered to intervene after a two-hour meeting with the Minister of Education, Sam Egwu, in Abuja on Thursday.

” I am concerned about the dispute between and the federal government. So the essence of this visit is to have the issues resolved in order to restore some integrity back into the academic calendar of universities. It is necessary to know that the future of Nigeria depends on human capital development, not on liquid (oil) resources.” The governor met with Mr. Egwu in the minister’s office, before holding a joint briefing together.

After the meeting he said “What can be problem is if the parties are not ready to talk.Let’s talk on the issues in the interest of the nation. I want to assure you that over the next couple of days, we will have the parties come back to the negotiation table.”

Open to negotiation
Mr. Egwu, who has been criticized for his role in the nation’s longest union strike in three years, said the Federal Government is willing to reconsider its stand.

“I am appreciative of the governor of Edo state who had come to contribute his quota in trying to resolve this problem which has been lingering for a long time,” he said. “Government is worried like every other Nigerian, we never thought this problem will linger on till this moment. This problem started between ASUU and Government many years ago, since 2001, and renegotiation in 2002 to 2009.”

The lecturers of the () yesterday embarked on protest march to seek the return of the Federal Government to the renegotiation table with the striking Academic Staff Union of Universities () with a view to ending the three months industrial action.

The rally which lasted more than three hours, kicked off at about 9.15a.m from the mini-campus of the university in the Gwagwalada Area Council of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) and lasted till 12. 20 p.m.

The procession which went through major parts of the streets in the Gwagwalada town, which disrupted vehicular movements for some time was, however, peaceful as they were provided with full police security.

The protesting lecturers were led by Dr. Abu Malam, the UNIABUJA Branch Chairman of ASUU while police security team was led by an Assistant Superintendent of Police (ASP), Mr. Makaila Mohammed.

The lecturers who carried anti-government placards, described the Education Minister, Sam Egwu; Minister of State for Education, Aisha Jubril Dukku and the Executive Secretary of the National Universities Commission (NUC), Prof. Julius Okojie, as the official “Boko Harram.”

Some of the inscriptions read: “Save University education in Nigeria, remove Sam Egwu”; “Dr. Egwu is a Boko Haram, yes or no” ; “Motivate lecturers and stop brain drain”; “Re-brand government officials and members of National Assembly.”

Dr. Malam while addressing journalists at the end of the protest march described as mere blackmail by the government to have unilaterally awarded the 40 per cent rise in salaries of academic staff in the media and directed that other issues be negotiated with the individual university governing councils.

He said it was merely black mailing the teachers because the councils had no legal and financial autonomy to implement any agreement.

“We reject the unilateral awards because they are not products of collective bargaining. We will not allow the government to divide the unions and destroy their collective strength,” he said.
