Federal Polytechnic, Idah was established by the Obasanjo administration in 1977 as Idah College of Technology along with  three others as an aggressive attempt by the then Military Administration to provide solutions to the problems of middle level  manpower in the country. This establishment was backed up by Decree No. 33 of 25th July, 1979.

The College, as it was then  known, took off officially on the 7th November, 1977 with a student population of one hundred and eighty distributed among two namely:

1. The School of Engineering Technology and

2. The School of Business Studies.

The School of Engineering Technology comprised four departments of Civil Engineering Technology, Electrical/Electronics Engineering Technology, Mechanical Engineering Technology and Metallurgical and Materials Engineering Technology.

The School of Business Studies commenced with one department of Secretarial Studies.   Facilities for the take-off of the various programmes in these departments were adequate.

At the take-off of the Polytechnic in 1977 the programmes that were run include the following:   ND/HND Civil Engineering Technology  ND/HND Mechanical Engineering Technology  ND/HND Electrical/Electronic Engineering Technology  ND/HND Metallurgical and Materials Engineering Technology  ND/HND Secretarial Studies.

At the first convocation in 1983, the departments had grown from five to fourteen. Over the years up to the year 2000,, the School of Technology with the following programmes were introduced:  ND/HND Science Technology (Chemistry, Biology/Microbiology and   Physics with Electronics options).  ND/HND Food Technology  ND/HND Hotel & Catering Management  ND/HND Mathematics/Statistics.  In the School of Business Studies, additional programmes were introduced. They include the following; ND/HND Business Studies ND/HND Accountancy  ND/HND Marketing.  The growth of the Polytechnic was however hampered by the unfortunate fire incidence of 19 … which destroyed a number of  engineering equipment/instruments.

This was a major setback, as the Polytechnic lost its accreditation to run HND programmes in Civil, Electrical/Electronic and Mechanical Engineering.

University Objectives

The main objectives of the College, according to the decree establishing it, is to provide full time and part-time courses of instruction and training in Technology, Commerce and Management, and in such other field of Applied learning relevant to the need of the development of Nigeria in the areas of industrial and Agricultural production and distribution and for research in the development and adaptation of techniques as the Council of the College may from time to time determine.

In Pursuit of this objectives, the College has continued to develop structurally, humanly and materially and Today is made up of nine(9) academic units called schools headed by Deans and Twenty-three(34) Departments headed by Heads of Departments
