uniosun was approved by as the 30th State University and the 80th in the Nigerian university system. The event climaxed a 15-year agitation for a university.

Shortly after the State was created on 27 August 1991, different communities took advantage of gubernatorial presence at State functions to pressure for a State-owned university.The project had remained at the bottom of the priority list of government until Prince (Dr.) Olagunsoye Oyinlola assumed office as Governor of the State in May 2003.

The idea of a university for Osun State was kindled in the mind of Prince Olagunsoye Oyinlola long before he was voted into power. As a youth in the early 60s, he envisioned a university for his community in the present Odo-Otin Local Government. The idea was significantly strengthened when he dutifully served as the Military Administrator of State. For over two years, he nurtured the State University as proprietor and Visitor. He began to solidify his experience in university management and he gained expertise in what it takes to set up and run a successful university.

The University now has presence in the six geo-political zones of the State. The Campuses are located at Osogbo (main campus), Okuku, Ejigbo, Ifetedo, Ikire, and Ipetu-jesa.

crawford is a private University of the Apostolic Faith Mission, recently licensed by the Federal Government of Nigeria. The University is committed to academic excellence and the highest levels of discipline and morals.

Location

Crawford University was licensed by the Federal Government of Nigeria on 9th June, 2005 to have her main campus at Faith City, Kilometer 8, Atan – Agbara Road, Igbesa, Ogun State and an off campus College (Agriculture) at Oye Ekiti, Ekiti State.

Although Igbesa is located in a rural agricultural setting, however, within 50 km radius of the site are highly urbanized areas. Foremost is the concentration of population called Metropolitan area, which has extended swiftly to neighboring towns like Ota, Ifo and Ikorodu.

There is also the neighboring town of Agbara, which has industrial estates hosting manufacturing plants of multinational companies like Nestle, Evans, Unilever, GlaxoSmithKline, PhamaDeko, Colodense Dumex etc. There are also residential estates built by both government housing corporations and private real estate companies. Linkages would be developed with these multinational companies for purposes of research, curricular development and exchange of expertise. In addition, the companies would provide avenues for placement of students who are on industrial attachment.

The Objectives of the University are:

Ambrose Alli University, Ekpoma

Ambrose Ali University, is both a teaching and examining body charged with the responsibilities of providing high education and advancing knowledge through teaching, learning and research.

It is also to provide course of instructions in various branches of learning, make provision for research and for the preservation, advancement and dissemination of knowledge in such manner as the University may determine. It is also to grant degrees, diplomas, certificates and other academic distinctions and honours to deserving persons.

History of the University

In the pursuance of the take-off of the University, Governor Alli appointed Prof. M. I. Ogbeide as the Vice Chancellor and Mr. S. A. Kalulu as the Registrar. A firm of Academic and Planners with Mrs. S. A. Aluko (Director of Planning at UNIBEN) as its Director was commissioned to prepare a long term physical and academic Master Plan for the University.

Operating from temporary hired quarters in Benin City, the two principal officers made trips to Ekpoma in search of physical infrastructure for the take-off of the University. With the co-operation of the Onojie of Ekpoma and Emaudo Community, a large parcel of land was made available for the permanent site of the University. Negotiations with the Okpebho Local Government authorities also led to the allocation of part of the Secretariat as offices for pioneer staff. A media advert for academic recruitment tours by the Vice Chancellor. The applications received were overwhelming. The first set of administrative staff to be recruited included Mr. S. O. Utomakili as Bursar, Engr F. O. A. Osawe as Director of Works Services and Messrs R. O. Okodugha and Dele Arekamhe as Principal Assistant Registrars respectively.

The first academic members who joined its early stage were Prof. V. E. Aimakhu who was Rector of the College of Medical Sciences and Mr. Polycarp Umoru was a Graduate Assistant in the College of Natural Sciences. These full time academic and administrative staff conducted the entrance examination that led to the admission of the first set of 400 students. In preparation to receive the students, some disused dormitories at Annunciation Catholic College, Irrua were taken over and modified into temporary hostels. The same was done at Ujoelen Grammar School where additional facilities for cafeteria services were required. The co-operation of the principals in providing these facilities as well as classrooms were very encouraging. Private buildings were rented for use as female hostels and indigenes were very helpful in assisting to meet the needs of staff and students

Although all hands appeared to be on deck to ensure that the target of opening the University on January 15, 1982 was met, the Governor felt that all was not well. This compelled him to pay a surprise visit to Ekpoma on January 18, 1982. on observing that some officers still lived outside Ekpoma, he relieved the Vice-Chancellor and Registrar of their posts on January 21, 1982 even though the pioneer 408 students were already around. During this period of uncertainty of about one week, Government quickly put in place the Governing Council under the chairmanship of Dr. Abel Ubeku. The Council was inaugurated on 27th January, 1982 and it immediately appointed Prof. Aimakhu as Acting Vice-Chancellor and Mr. R. Okodugha as acting Registrar. The new chief executive rose up to the challenge to restore public confidence in the University by arranging orientation activities for the new students and registration for courses and commencement of academic activities. This involved speedily contacting Lecturers from neighbouring tertiary institutions who were willing to assist on part-time basis. Part-time Lecturers came from as far as and Ibadan. Between February and March, lectures had commenced in the humanities and sciences.

The first matriculation ceremony on February 8, 1982 was another milestone attended by many dignitaries including the Visitor and Governor of the State, Professor Ambrose Alli, HRH Onojie of Ekpoma, M. A. Akhimien II, members of the Governing Council, civil Commissioners, top civil servants and thousands of well wishers and relatives of matriculating students. The theme of the Acting Vice-Chancellor’s address ‘Great Things have small beginnings’ was reflective of the increasing confidence that had been stimulated by the remarkable achievements of the University within such a short time. A total of 408 students were matriculated as detailed below. They had been selected from over 15000 applicants showing heavy demand for the University even at its inception.

CONDITIONS FOR ADMISSION OF STUDENTS TO TERTIARY INSTITUTIONS

(i)       The minimum age for entry into tertiary institutions is 16,
years unless the candidate was certified as gifted.

(ii)       A student entering a tertiary institution must produce a letter of recommendation / testimonial from the principal of his or her last Secondary School

(iii)      As a condition for admission, or re-admission, every student must produce a letter of reference from a person of reputable standing in the society who can vouch for the good behaviour of the student.

Rivers State University of Science and Technology: RSUST

rsust, Port Harcourt , the first Technological University in Nigeria was established in 1980 from the Rivers State College of Science and Technology which was established in 1972.

Its objectives are as follows:
•  To produce Scientific and Technical manpower of various levels needed for essential development;

•  To assist in the industrial and other development programmes through consultancy services, special project centers and     related activities.

Bowen University

Bowen University is a owned by the Nigerian Baptist Convention and named after Reverend Thomas Jefferson Bowen who pioneered Baptist work in Nigeria in 1850.

The University obtained a final Government approval in 2001 but commenced academic activities on the 4th of November 2002 through its first student intake of about 500.

The University philosophy

The University is conceived as a centre of learning and research of distinction; combining academic excellence with love of humanity, borne out of a God-fearing attitude, in accordance with the Baptist tradition of ethical behaviour, social responsibility and democratic ethos.  The guiding philosophy of the University is Excellence and Godliness.

Vision
The vision of the University is to be one of the foremost institutions for producing first rate graduates in science, technology and the humanities, who combine godliness and academic excellence with a strong sense of ethical responsibility, towards the development of the society at large.

Mission
The mission is to provide high quality, morally sound and socially relevant education, in the most cost-effective manner, to all its students, irrespective of gender, race, colour, ethnicity or religion.  The University will develop, promote and be run as a unique with the following distinctive features:

University of Abuja

dates back to 1976, when the conceived the idea of an Open University system for Nigeria. The purpose was to provide an avenue for the ever-growing number of applicants to the existing universities, who could not be accommodated because of limited facilities.

The programmes operated by these universities were considered inadequate to meet the needs of Nigerians who could not afford to leave their paid jobs to embark on a full-time university education.

To meet these needs and in realization of the vital role which a comprehensively planned distance education system could play in a country like Nigeria, the Federal Government was advised to establish, as soon as possible, a separate and distinct open university institution, to be organized nationwide on a systematic and standardized basis.

NATIONAL OPEN UNIVERSITY
In 1977,  the Federal Government decided to “make life-long education the basis for the nation’s educational policy”. This decision was clearly stated in the National Policy on Education published by the Federal Government in 1977 and revised in 1981. The philosophy of education was designed to ensure that “at any stage of the educational process after primary education, an individual will be able to choose between continuing his full-time studies, combining work with study, or embarking on full-time employment without excluding the prospect of resuming studies later on”. It was therefore obvious that the Federal Government had resolved to enable those who can benefit from higher education to be given access to it, either “through universities or correspondence courses, or open universities, or part-time and work study programmes”. This idea must have been strengthened by the fact that even before any university was established in Nigeria, some notable Nigerians obtained external degrees of the University of London after taking overseas correspondence courses and studying on a part-time basis.

Although the idea of an open university was conceived during the military era, it was the civilian administration of the second Republic that got it off the ground. Thus, the National Open University of Nigeria was set up by a National Assembly Act on 22nd July 1983. Unfortunately, the life span of the University was cut short by the intervention of the military, which occurred in December 1983 and that administration decided to suspend the activities of the University in February 1984 and finally closed it down in May 1984.

ESTABLISHMENT OF THE UNIVERSITY OF
On 19th May 1987, the National Universities Commission (NUC) formally inaugurated a Planning Committee on the proposed University of Abuja.
Based on the recommendations of the Planning Committee, the University of Abuja was established on 1st January 1988. While the University came into existence in 1988, its statutes, Decree No. 106 as amended, was signed into law in 1992 giving the University its operating legal instrument. One of the provisions of the law States that the University should “undertake as part of its academic programmes distance learning and part-time courses in various disciplines to cater for the interest of the working class or those who could not benefit directly in full-time university education”. Obviously, by this provision, the functions of the defunct National Open University devolved on the newly established conventional University of Abuja, which was definitely a dual mode university, comprising the conventional system and the distance learning system. Academic work began in the University in 1990 with the matriculation of the pioneers students.

LOCATION OF THE UNIVERSITY
The location of the University at Abuja, the Federal capital city of Nigeria, is in line with developments in most parts of the world. Universities have academic and cultural roles to play in a society and have become sine qua non for the greatness of a city. The University was allocated a large, well-situated piece of land covering about 11,824 hectares along the Abuja-Lokoja road by the authorities of the Federal Capital Territory. Presently, the University operates from a temporary site called “Mini Campus” located in Phase II, Gwagwalada about 55 kilometers South-West axis of Abuja. The Mini Campus has been described as physically overdeveloped by the National Universities Commission, hence the need to commence the development of the University’s permanent site.
