, ABEOKUTA (FORMERLY OGUN STATE POLYTECHNIC) commenced operation on two temporary campuses, namely: Oke-Egunya and Onikolobo. Movement of all departments from the temporary campuses to the permanent site at Ojere started in April 1985 and was completed in March, 1988.

The Ojere campus is situated in the South-Eastern part of Abeokuta, off old Owode road and some 4km from Ibara, in the capital of Ogun State of Nigeria. The site which covers about 960 hectares of land is located on an undulating topography with some marked relief features and series of valleys which provide good scenery. It is a well drained site bounded in the south by River Ogun. Thus, the area is endowed with rich natural beauty and history.

Arguably, the Polytechnic has a pride of place as one of the frontline tertiary institutions in the country today. This rating is not only in the area of academic attainments, but in the fields of research and practical contributions towards the technological development of Nigeria. Indeed, the institution has grown in leaps and bounds.

The establishment of Moshood Abiola (formerly Ogun State) Polytechnic was necessitated by the Federal Government white paper on National Policy on Education, which declared that: technical education forms the basis of technological development and as such, a greater proportion of educational expenditure would continually be devoted to technical education by government, both at the Federal and State levels.

Besides, the Ogun State Government believes that the development of technical manpower is one of the reasonable investments that a nation can embark upon in a programme of nation and society transformation. Thus, the Ogun State Polytechnic was established under the provisions of section 3 of the law cited as the Ogun State Polytechnic Law No. 8 of 12 June, 1980 and reviewed as the Moshood Abiola Polytechnic, Edict, 1999.

However, the first set of 220 students was admitted into the institution in January, 1979 with staff compliment of 25 academic and 5 senior administrative officers. As at 2004/2005 session, students’ population had risen to 18,878 with about 520 academic and non-academic staff compliment.

has grown from a humble beginning in 1956 when it started as “Kaduna Technical Institute” to what is today the largest Polytechnic in Africa South of the Sahara in terms of staff, student population and physical infrastructure.

It is the second oldest technological institution in Nigeria, the oldest being Yaba College of Technology which was established in 1948. Kaduna Polytechnic is also the second largest tertiary institution in Nigeria after Ahmadu Bello University, Zaria.

that suggested the upgrading of Yaba College of Technology to an institute and proposed the establishment of technical institutes in Kaduna and Enugu. In 1956, the Kaduna Technical Institute took off with the following mandate:

(a) To operate in fields other than those of the Nigerian College of Arts, Science and Technology.
(b) To train engineering assistants (technicians)
(c) To provide “feeders” for the Nigerian College of Arts, Science and Technology as much as possible but not exclusively.
(d) To provide courses leading to a standard of the Ordinary National Diploma Certificate in the United Kingdom.

It was envisaged that the courses raised to the standards equivalent to Higher National Certificate and Diploma. Candidates admitted to Junior Technical Courses were those that successfully completed their primary education. The Junior Technical Programme (comparable to the Secondary Technical in England) was to run for four years after which students were to be awarded the National Certificate in Mechanical Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Civil Engineering, Building Engineering or Commerce. Provisions were also made for students to prepare for the City and Guilds Examination in several technical subjects. These were in Electrical Installation, Telecommunication subjects, Sheet and Metal Working, Carpentry, Wood Machinist, Brick Workmanship, Painting and Decorating, Structural Engineering, Painting Trade, Handicraft Teacher Training and General Craft Instruction in wood, Metal, Pottery, Weaving, Leather Works and Bookbinding.

The Commercial Department of the Kaduna Technical Institute opened in 1956 with the objective of teaching commercial subjects to meet the shortage of trained clerical staff. The Junior Commercial courses ran for two years in residence and successful candidates were awarded Junior Certificate. The Senior Commercial courses ran for one year with the students selected from the junior course. The successful candidates were awarded the Senior Certificate. Subjects taught in both courses were English Language, Book Keeping, shorthand, Typewriting, Commerce, History, Economics and Elements of Mercantile Law.

By 1959/60, evening courses were held twice weekly (Mondays and Thursdays) for beginning students who were in clerical employment and had been educated in Middle II standard or had a certificate in English Language of the Royal Society of Arts or its equivalent. Elementary courses were offered for students who had completed a course in the Theory of Pitman’s Shorthand while intermediate courses were offered for students who had certificate in Shorthand at the speed of not less than 70 w.p.m.

The Northern Nigeria Executive Council at its meeting of 17th August, 1962, redesignated the Kaduna technical Institute as ‘the Polytechnic Kaduna’. It became ‘Kaduna Polytechnic’ in 1968 under the Federal Government Decree No. 20 of 1968 which was amended in 1979 by Decree No.73. On 27th August, 1991, the Federal Government took over the institution under Decree No. 40 of the same year.

The institution was established with the objective of providing diverse instructions, training and research in technology, the sciences, commerce, the humanities and in-service programmes for members of the public service in Nigeria. In 1968, it amalgamated two formerly independent training centres namely: the College of Science and Technology (formerly Kaduna Technical Institute) and the College of Administrative and Business Studies (formerly Staff Development Centre). The College of Environmental Studies (formerly Survey Unit) was intergrated in April 1970 to complete the three collegiate structure of the polytechnic which operated within 1990.

A new college, the College of Engineering was in 1990 created out of the College of Science and Technology to form the four units of the collegiate structure of the Kaduna Polytechnic.

The polytechnic is highly cosmopolitan with students admitted from all over Nigeria and other countries. It has been in the forefront in the training of high and middle level manpower for the various sectors of the economy.

From a modest figure of 158 students in 1961 at the Technical Institute, student enrolment increased to 894 by 1968 and a total of 594 students attending courses on part-time, while 300 were on full-time programmes. Currently, the polytechnic has over 20,000 students undertaking 173 programmes spread over the 30 academic departments of the four colleges. The courses vary in duration and character, ranging from Certificate, Diploma, National Diploma, Higher Diploma, Higher National Diploma, Post-graduate Diploma to Post Higher National Diploma, as well as NCE (Technology) and B.Ed. (Technology) which is run in affiliation with the Federal University of Technology, Minna.

The uniqueness of the curricula covered under the various programmes is the emphasis on practicals to ensure that graduates acquire the right skills required by government, industry and commerce or self-employment.

Kaduna Polytechnic has mounted a number of Post-graduate programmes and Post-HND programmes in Urban and Regional Planning, Land Surveying and Building. In 1995, the polytechnic started the first ever National Board of Technical Education (NBTE) approved Post-HND programme in Electronics and Communication Engineering.

The (IMT), Enugu came into existence under the then East Central State of Nigeria Edict No 10 of 1973 promulgated by the administrator of East central State – Ajie Ukpabi Asika.

Prior to the establishment of the great IMT, there existed up-till 1967 the College of Technology which offered courses in Engineering and Laboratory Technology leading to the award of Ordinary Diploma, the Institute of Administration which provided short in-service training of various grades, the Co-operative College which offered a certificate course in Co-operative Studies to Co-operative inspectors from the ministry.

These institutions were autonomous and were located differently. The College of Technology was part of the Ministry of education and the Ministry controlled it. The Ministry of Establishments controlled the institute of Administration while the Co-operative College was directly under the Ministry of Rural development.

All these institutions were staffed by civil servants who were posted there from the Ministry and could be re-posted to other departments or units according to the needs of the Civil Service.

In 1970 there arose the need to establish a higher institution of learning for upgrading and training of our men and women in technological, managerial and engineering fields. This need was pursued vigorously and in October 1971 the Ukpabi Asika administration decided to merge the former College of Technology with the Institute of Administration. To give effect to this decision both the institute and the College came under the unified control of the cabinet office on 1st April, 1972.

In October of the same year the Administrator of the East Central State appointed a Provisional Council. This council was charged with determining and recommending to the government an appropriate structure of an autonomous, technical as well as professional and managerial man-power in the subject areas indicated by the state and national needs. The Council pursued its task with vigour and vision and submitted a report early in April 1973.

Thus on 31 May 1973 the Edict No 10 of 1973 titled “The Institute of Management and Technology Edict 1973” was promulgated. The edict took effect from 1st July 1973 and thus gave birth to what is now known as the Institute of Management and Technology (IMT) Enugu. Dr. Ukwu I Ukwu became the first chairman of council while Professor M.O Chijioke became the first rector and The first Registrar in the person of Mr. B.O. Akwukwuma.

Federal Polytechnic, Idah was established by the Obasanjo administration in 1977 as Idah College of Technology along with  three others as an aggressive attempt by the then Military Administration to provide solutions to the problems of middle level  manpower in the country. This establishment was backed up by Decree No. 33 of 25th July, 1979.

The College, as it was then  known, took off officially on the 7th November, 1977 with a student population of one hundred and eighty distributed among two namely:

1. The School of Engineering Technology and

2. The School of Business Studies.

The School of Engineering Technology comprised four departments of Civil Engineering Technology, Electrical/Electronics Engineering Technology, Mechanical Engineering Technology and Metallurgical and Materials Engineering Technology.

The School of Business Studies commenced with one department of Secretarial Studies.   Facilities for the take-off of the various programmes in these departments were adequate.

At the take-off of the Polytechnic in 1977 the programmes that were run include the following:   ND/HND Civil Engineering Technology  ND/HND Mechanical Engineering Technology  ND/HND Electrical/Electronic Engineering Technology  ND/HND Metallurgical and Materials Engineering Technology  ND/HND Secretarial Studies.

At the first convocation in 1983, the departments had grown from five to fourteen. Over the years up to the year 2000,, the School of Technology with the following programmes were introduced:  ND/HND Science Technology (Chemistry, Biology/Microbiology and   Physics with Electronics options).  ND/HND Food Technology  ND/HND Hotel & Catering Management  ND/HND Mathematics/Statistics.  In the School of Business Studies, additional programmes were introduced. They include the following; ND/HND Business Studies ND/HND Accountancy  ND/HND Marketing.  The growth of the Polytechnic was however hampered by the unfortunate fire incidence of 19 … which destroyed a number of  engineering equipment/instruments.

This was a major setback, as the Polytechnic lost its accreditation to run HND programmes in Civil, Electrical/Electronic and Mechanical Engineering.

University Objectives

The main objectives of the College, according to the decree establishing it, is to provide full time and part-time courses of instruction and training in Technology, Commerce and Management, and in such other field of Applied learning relevant to the need of the development of Nigeria in the areas of industrial and Agricultural production and distribution and for research in the development and adaptation of techniques as the Council of the College may from time to time determine.

In Pursuit of this objectives, the College has continued to develop structurally, humanly and materially and Today is made up of nine(9) academic units called schools headed by Deans and Twenty-three(34) Departments headed by Heads of Departments
