Federal Polytechnic, Bauchi is one of the seven Polytechnics established by the Federal Military Government under Decree No.33 of July, 1979. The Decree stipulates the functions of the Polytechnic to be as follows:-

Adamawa State Polytechnic Yola, was established in 1991 by taking over the College of Preliminary Studies (CPS) Yola and the Staff Development Institute (SDI) Numan. All the programs hitherto run by the two institutions were maintained.

Federal Polytechnic Ado-ekiti was established in January 1977 in Jos,Plateau State.In 1978,it was moved by the Federal Government of Nigeria to Akure,Ondo State in order to maintain an equitable spread of federal government institutions among the States of the Federation.

Kwara State Polytechnic, Ilorin was established by his Excellency, the then Military Governor of Kwara State, Col. David Bamigboye. The decision to establish the Polytechnic was announced during the launching of the four Year Development plan in 1971.
