Although, the student population was only 1,039 at inception, this increased to 4,636 in 2003/2004 and later 10,294 in 2006/2007. Given the fact that the university maintains the quota provided by the National Universities Commission (NUC), it may continue to be a relatively small but efficient one.

There has also been a signification increase in the number of academic and non-teaching staffs. Given the initial dearth of experienced academic staff, the pool of retired staff from other universities has been a significant source of such staffs.

Akwa Ibom State University of Technology is a State owned University in Akwa Ibom, It will be recalled that Akwa Ibom State, one of the 36 States of the Federation, was excised from the Cross River State in 1987.

Prior to its emergence as a State, Uyo, the Capital of Akwa Ibom State hosted the main campus of the University of Cross River State. This University ceased to exist in 1992, when the Federal Government established in its place, the Federal University of Uyo. In this regard, it is on record that almost all the newly-created States in Nigeria had either been operating, or had made plans for the establishment of their own Universities. There are 31 in Nigeria, with Akwa Ibom State seriously challenged by the unenviable status of a wealthy latecomer
