The Senate on Wednesday said it was not contemplating any impeachment proceedings against President Umaru Yar‘Adua.
Responding to a question while briefing journalists after the plenary session of the Senate, the Vice-Chairman, Senate Committee on Information and Media, Senator Anthony Manzo, said there was no need for impeachment because the situation in the country was stable, the News Agency of Nigeria reports.
He said, “There is a subsisting resolution on ground. We believe that the situation is stable.
“Impeachment is not something we are contemplating at this time.”
Manzo was apparently referring to the concurrent resolution of both chambers of the National Assembly, asking Vice-President Goodluck Jonathan to act for Yar‘Adua who is currently receiving medical attention.
Asked why members of the Save Nigeria Group were prevented from gaining access to the National Assembly, Manzo said that the leadership of the Senate did not instruct the security agencies to disallow the protesters from coming into the Assembly.
He said, “I‘m not aware that they were barred from entering the National Assembly. The leadership and indeed the Senate are always ready to receive anybody.”
Controversy has continued to trail the absence of Yar’Adua from the country, following his overseas treatment in Saudi Arabia for 93 days.
But the country was further treated to another round of confusion when the President was reportedly brought into country 15 days ago while prominent Nigerians, including Jonathan were unable to see him.
