unnUniversity of Nigeria, Nsukka is the first indigenous Nigerian University founded by the Federal Government of Nigeria. A law to establish a University in the Eastern Region of Nigeria was passed in 1955.

While that date marks the formal beginning of the history of the University of Nigeria, the enactment of this legislation was in fact the culmination of many years of thought and discussion by several Nigerian leaders, and inspired particularly by the then Premier of the Eastern Region, Dr .

One of the first steps taken by the Eastern Nigeria Government towards the implementation of its commitment was an invitation to both the United States of America and the United Kingdom to send advisers to help in the planning of physical and educational aspects of the proposed university.

University Structure

The University has two campuses, in Nsukka (, ) and in Enugu (University of Nigeria Enugu campus, UNEC). UNEC is for Faculties of Law, Medicine, Business, Health Sciences and Environmental Studies. UNN on the other hand also houses the Faculties of Agriculture, Arts, Biological Sciences, Education, Engineering, Pharmaceutical Sciences, Physical Sciences, Social Sciences, and Veterinary Medicine.

Male students within the university are usually referred to as lions, while the females are reffered to as lionesses, hence the popular university slogan: Great Lions and Lionesses

Students Admission

Undergraduate

A freshman class of about 5,0000 students and a transfer class of about 30 students are admitted each year.

Graduate Admissions

More than 65 departments and programs offer graduate degrees at University of Nigeria Nsukka, and admission requirements vary greatly among them.

Student Financial Aids The Department in liaison with the University Administration seeks sources of financial aids for the indigent students. Such sources include: student work-aids, bursary and scholarship awards, etc.
