AS Kaduna residents yesterday joined others all over the world to celebrate Valentine Day, multiple bomb explosions again rocked the city, killing one police officer from the force anti-bomb unit. The explosions occurred barely 24 hours after security agents shot a pastor and Director in the Kaduna Ministry of Information, who allegedly tried to force his way into the Kaduna State Government House.
The first bomb, however, went off at about 10:30 a.m. at the meat sellers’ area around the historic Sultan Bello Juma’at Mosque at Ungwan Sarki, while the second explosion occurred near a military checkpoint, under the pedestrian overhead bridge, killing the unidentified police officer from the anti- bomb disposal unit.
The police officer was killed while trying to defuse the Improvised Explosive Device (IED).
The state’s Commissioner of Police, Bala Nasarawa, who confirmed the incident, said the two explosions at Unguwan Sarki bus stop occurred about an hour to each other, at about 10:45 and 11:40 in the morning.
According to him, ‘the first Improvised Explosive Device (IED) exploded in a gutter near a parked 15-seater Ford bus; no one was affected.
The second explosion occurred when a police anti bomb personnel, one Sergeant Sunday Badang, was about to detonate it and the Improvised Explosive Device (IED) exploded and he was killed instantly.
‘The fragment affected two other persons near the scene. They were rushed to 44 Army Reference Hospital, Kaduna, for treatment and the victims are in stable condition.
‘The area was equally swept by the police Anti-Bomb Squad and no other explosive device was detected. Equally, we have beefed up security in the entire state and members of the public are hereby advised to report any suspicious object to security agencies and to avail us with credible information that will nip in the bud, these criminality.’
The Police Public Relations Officer (PPRO), DSP Aminu Lawal, however, called on all residents to remain calm and go about their normal business activities. He assured that the security agencies in the state were on top of the situation.
The PPRO described the death of the police officer as unfortunate and expressed the police sincere condolences to his family.
The Sole Administrator of Kaduna North, Alhaji Ibrahim Usman, while condemning the attack, urged the people to be security conscious.
He stressed that since the increased spate of bombings in the state, all the 23 local governments have resolved to meet with security agencies to ensure security of lives and property of residents.
